Well, I jumped out of 40k back at the start of 4th Edition and played most of my games in 3rd, but I'm being dragged back into the hobby by some friends of mine and figured I may as well jump back in with both feet. At this point I have next to nothing left and am able to field a 500pt army of Tyranids, my preferred race, and a 750pt army of Space Marines, Ultramarines 3rd Company, none of which are painted very well if at all and most of them are damaged in one way of another. For reasons known only to the younger me, I seemed to buy models based on 'coolness' just to have them, not to build and paint them, but just to own them. So my Space Marines have something like seven HQ choices and one tactical squad while my Nids have ten broods of Genestealers. It's better than starting again with nothing, but not by much. I'm working well with what I have and have a couple games of 7th edition under my belt with fieldable detachments, but I've got a long way to go still.
My time back in has rekindled my love for new armies and models and while my Nids are going to be getting a big upgrade to add to the classic models I have left, I will be starting an Eldar army from nothing as well. Hopefully things go well enough that I get the urge to play my armies the way I like, but I'll admit, I'm hesitant with all these 'built to win' lists that I see lately. Things have changed a lot since 3rd Edition...

Welcome to Dakka from another newbie on the board. I am in the same boat as you time wise, I left at the beginning of 4th and came back during the last two months of 6th. Fortunately I kept my complete 3rd edition WE together which I am finding out is still fun to play but goes against the current meta.
