So Cal

So today in my Wood Elf adventures I was playing probably the most advanced person at our store with his Tomb Kings. We ran into the following situation.

Glade Guard shoot at Skelatal Archers x5 (2 RaF, 1 Musician, 1 Banner, 1 Champ) and a Tomb King attached to the unit

Glade guard Hit 6 Poison Shots, and deal an additional 4 wounds.

According to the rule book in the section about shooting at mixed units, it states that if there are at least 1, 5 model rank, that the Character can not be hit.

We discussed this rule for a bit, and ended up flipping a coin to see which way it went, while clearly the rules say that he could not be hit, we both felt it was kind of gakky that there were 5 wounds of overkill on the unit.

with the coin toss it ended up the tomb king died, and while normally this would change the pace of the game for a tomb king player, the list he brought was vastly unaffected by crumbling, losing a total of 3 skelatal archers, and a catapult that didn't die until the last turn anyway.

We decided at the end of the game that this probably didnt make much of a difference as he ended up winning by 232 VP anyway. But I am interested to see any other interpretations of this rule.

Well, IIRC, champ doesn't count as r-n-f, so there were 4 rankers, champ and the king, so of the 10 hits it would be allocated to models (1 on each then excess, so probably 4 poison on the unit, normal on king and champ, the remaining 2 of each onto the rankers.)

So Cal

What if there was no champion, and there were 5 rank and file guys, can the character take no wounds from this?

so long as there are 5 or more rank and file characters are immune to normal shooting attacks at them, in fairness to the rule it makes fine sense when units are large, but less when there are few remaining, its unfortunately just the way it is.

that being said, a lone tomb king would likely end up being a pin cushion the next turn anyway.

P. 93 bottom

"A LOS cannot be made if there are less than 5 RNF models including musician and standard bearer but not champ."

However, that specific rule to LOS doesn't change the fact they are still RNF. In fact it says on the same page:

"Unless a champion is slain by a direct attack then he must be the last RNF model to be removed as a casualty."

^which says he is RNF. He just doesn't count for LOS because a specific rule says he doesn't.
