In the allied matrix, it shows all factions are battle brothers with it self. So could i allie my crimson slaughter with itself?

i cant find where it says you cant.

Yes but you can't use the allied detachment as it must be a different faction to your primary detachment (also remember Chaos Space Marines are also the same faction as CS).

The Allied Detachment has a restriction that all units must have a different Faction to the unit in your Primary Detachment.

Yes but you can still ally with yourself (and any supplement) and do so a battle brothers. You just can't use the allied detachment to do so.

In that case "allying yourself" is unclear because it can have different meanings in WH40k.

You CAN have different Detachments of the same Faction in your army.
You CANNOT have an Allied Detachment of the same Faction in your army.

I think that covers it, right?

You CANNOT have an Allied Detachment of the same Faction in your army.
You CANNOT have an Allied Detachment of the same Faction as your Primary Detachment.

For example. You can have 3 detachments. One from codex imperial giuard, and two from codex sisters of battle. As long as your warlord is from the IG detachment (making the IG detachment your primary detachment) one or both of the sisters detachments can be an allied detachment.

To be perfectly clear, the following setup is 100% legal:

Combined Arms Detachment 1:
Crimson Slaughter
1 HQ
2 Troops

Combined Arms Detachment 2:
Crimson Slaughter
1 HQ
2 Troops

Whereas the following is NOT legal:

Combined Arms Detachment:
Crimson Slaughter
1 HQ
2 Troops

Allied Detachment:
Crimson Slaughter
1 HQ
1 Troops

In real world terms, you can have multiple CAD's from the exact same codex/supplement in a single army. However, you cannot ally the same codex/supplement with itself. The only real difference is that an Allied detachment only requires a single troop choice whereas a full CAD requires 2 troops. Which basically means if you want to "ally" with yourself (and not go blind) then you just need to make sure you have 1 more troop choice in your list.

Alternatively, you can just go unbound and pick/choose whatever you want from whatever books you want to use until you reach the point limit.

Also, in your 2nd example, the Allied detachment could not be Chaos Space Marines or Black Legion, as they are the same Faction.

Yeah that's right and as Don Mondo points out it is also not legal in the 2nd example to have Chaos Marines (or a different CSM supplement) in the allied detachment as all supplements count as the same faction as their parent codex.

I thought Crimson Slaughter and Black Legion had specific permission to ally with CSM.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

And they can they just can't use the Allied Detachment. The permission in the Supplements to ally with the main codex has become functionally redundant now.

Indeed,
An old Rule from a less civilized time before factions, when the only way to select things from two different books was to take one as an allied detachment.
Now we can take whatever we want, putting them into their own Detachments, so the Rule is obsolete as everything can Ally with everthing.

So what? An elegant rule for a more civilized edition?

There is the glaring exception of Space Marines, which may be taken as an allied detachment so long as they have different chapter tactics.
