Why do you go to a 40k tournament?

At my FLGS 40k has lost a lot of ground to Warmachine and Infinity due to some of the problems with 6th edition and model prices. With 7th edition being a bit more fun than the last I want to attract more people into the store to play tournaments and have a good time. What gimmicks should be used to incentivize attendees?

One store I visited recently while on vacation has a raffle for in store credit. You get a ticket for entry, a ticket for winning a game, a ticket if you bring in a finished piece of terrain, and the top place finishers get a ticket in addition to other store credit.

Do you suppose high cash prizes ($100) would attract more attendees? Or would it just attract cheaters and be too much of a hassle?

In an atmosphere intended to attract new players should there be some sort of some sort of comp score to discourage super beardy lists?

Raffles can work but typically do better when working the opposite of what you suggested. Top players already take home prize support so getting more tickets for winning just means the top players have a good chance to taking home even more support. I think you are better served going with, 1 ticket for entry, a ticket for each game you lose, and a ticket for bringing terrain (if your store needs it).

I don't think cash prizes do anything to attract players per say.

As for comp and new players. Often time comp systems will penalize new players more than other players simply because they own fewer models so if their list gets comped, they have no recourse.

IME the biggest thing you can to to make a tourney more successful is advertise it a lot, if people know about it they are more likely to come.

I like to go to tournaments because I know I'll get three reasonable competitive games in a short amount of time, I get to meet new people that I can schedule games with later, and I just like competitive play in general.

The prize support (or lack thereof) isn't usually a consideration.

Prizes are a big deal, but I mostly go for the competition. If I get something back then its just gravy.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Being able to play multiple games against a variety of people and lists is what draws me in.

I think the bigger the prize, or the higher the buy in might increase the number of discrepancies that pop up as players have more at stake.

Tournament days discounts:
Top 3 players: 25% off up to 100$ purchase
Everyone else: 10% off.

I go for fun first and for most, tournaments can be fun if they are competitive, but also if they are just unique in how they present missions and so on.

I thouroughly enjoy "compete-hammer" as well as beer hammer style games, and variaty is nice.

Prizes are a great draw too.

Ticket prices need to be reasonable too though, if you want 100$ a ticket just to cash in, you are likly going to price out most sane people.

I like tournaments because I get to play against a few people who I don't normally get to play against, and get a lot of games in in a fairly short amount of time. If I happen to do well, that's cool too.

Is it in a format that I think I will have fun?
Are my friends going?
Raffles/prizes etc are nice but not the primary draw for me. Heck, I gave away the prizes I won the last few times I managed to win anything. Agree with Breng on the raffle bit, ticket for losing since the winners are already getting a better chance at prizes. Also like Tiger's idea, but doubt that will happen (altho if you could get Hooters to sponsor....)
