So, My brother wants (but is not set on) Space Wolves... The problem is we already have space wolves players! I Suggested these options. He only wants the SW for (1) the painting (2) Close Combat...

Here are some options I gave him,

(1) Buy another codex but play with SW characters
- He wants animals (fenrisian wolves... Any FW options for other CC army?)

(2) Buy GK
- he likes very few troops (and still animal problem)

Any suggestions??? I am at a loss for what to say!

Honestly if he is set on SW for the painting hes not going to get it anywhere else, and with how much your paying for 40k as a hobby he might as well play what he is into.

as for other SM variants that are decent at close combat

Carcharodons / Space Sharks, are put out by forge world they have awesome fluff and function similar to SW with their mechanics

Blood Angels, they are due for a new codex at some point and are a CC oriented space marine faction

Black Templars, but alot of people feel shafted by them being rolled into C:SM, my local BT player uses them with the Carcharodons rules

With Thunderwolf Cav / Fenris Wolves there isnt much else from other armies that are similar game wise (minus daemon khorne mounts / dogs) - I'd say let he play what he's into.

Only Space Shark stuff I found on FW, but it's something. Lexicanum or Wikia will have more if he's interested in converting standard SM's.

Also, Minotaurs are a decent way to go in terms of nasty melee if I remember correctly and I know they've got a few things on FW as well.

CSM.

He wants space marines that are choppy that have interesting things to paint? That's the entire codex. Plus, he gets to play the badasses. Have him do a google image search for khorne stuff. They're probably more what he's looking for anyways - hairy, axe-murdering space marines.

Or blood angels, if he wants to play loyalists and likes close combat. If you can sell him on the vampire thing.

Otherwise, yeah, SW.

The new starter set is Space Wolves vs Orks. It would be a good time to start them. Always go with your first instinct when choosing your first army. Eliminates regret. Later on he will figure out how he likes to play and which army suits him.

How about chaos daemons? There are example bloodcrushers of khorne and flesh hounds of khorne. Another option would be Tyranids.

I'd let him play Space Wolves.

He could even do traitor Space Wolves and use bits from both CSM and SW ranges.

Perhaps hold off until the new codex is out.

Yah, That will work! As long as we don't have 2 of the EXACT same looking armies!
