I've been getting a lot into kill team (200 points, each model counts as a unit) lately and was thinking about trying a new army.

I currently run a fairly effective Dark Angels army:

-Tac Squad
Razorback w/ heavy bolter and storm bolter
Heavy Bolter

-Scout Squad w/ snipers

While I win a fair share of my games, I'm getting a bit bored with them. I'm used to playing with only a handful of models (10 guys and a tank), so thought I'd see what it's like to spam the board with 30+ models
Right now it's between Guard with:

-Platoon Command (no upgrades)

-Infantry Squad
Autocannon

-Infantry Squad
Autocannon

-Infantry Squad (no upgrades)

Or Chaos with:

Cultists
some guns?

More Cultists?

Any advice? Keep in mind I have 20 cultists sitting around somewhere from the box set (and might be able to mooch some from friends), so I assume chaos would be more friendly with my wallet, but I can spend the money if the army sounds appealing enough.

Autocannons would be good, though taking special weapons would be very handy with the amount of options they can take in one Infantry Platoon to provide Specialists. I'm curious how orders would work...

I would take a large unit of Chaos Cultists to gain all three weapon upgrades and do a mix of autoguns. Taking Marks of Chaos is a bit excessive and many points would be wasted either on models that won't need close combat buffs, or taking multiple smaller units and paying for the champion tax.

On a side note, I will have a Kill Team for an upcoming tournament and plan on taking a 5x Thousand Sons w/ Rhino. It won't be 200 points, but I hope that I can snipe other models one-by-one...

Cultists are inferior to guardsmen in every way other than cc. But with their resilience, +1 attack doesn't matter.

I'm interested to see how those Thousand Sons will work out. Just a heads up, everyone I play with does come prepared to take out a razorback/rhino. I happened to have a specifically bad experience in which an outflanking tau (a stealth suit I believe) blew up my razorback start of second turn. :(

If you're not upgrading the PCS nor taking conscripts nor special weapons teams (for massed flamers) you're not really getting the bang for buck of a platoon. If you're massing guardsmen, max out on cheap special weapons like snipers, flamers, maybe grenade launchers for anti light vehicle. If you take 20 conscripts you can pretty much swamp the battlefield.

If you want a more gunline kill team, then you gotta go vets. BS4 will be well worth it, and all you're losing is the naked CCS for the same points. With camo vets, everyone has snare mines, which will be the bane of assault based kill teams. You can equip 20 vets with doctrines and special weapons and still have points left over for a sentinel or ratlings.

Thanks. I concur about the risk with the Rhino, though I figured it benefits the whole unit deployed in a Dedicated Transport to keep the low model count alive longer than taking 10x Chaos Cultists along with them. Before, I had a unit of Plague Marines as my Kill Team.

I would like the Kill Team ebook to get a 7th edition updated to align with the new special rules...

If you want an angry mob for a Kill Team, take two units of Cultists (as a maxed out one is easily 150+ pts for 35 models and be forced to take Marks with remaining points left from weapon upgrades, whereas, you could squeeze 45 models between two units) to provide a lot of models.

If you went with a basic Infantry Platoon w/ Conscripts, you would have 45 models for 190 pts. Take two Grenade Launchers or one Autocannon to max out. With Conscripts, they may be BS2, but they come with Lasguns and Frag Grenades!

My preference would be to take two units of Veterans and kit them out.
