Im looking for advice or inspiration for modeling vortex blasts. Should I just paint some blast markers or is there some pre-fab stuff out there?

If you do manage to get either the original Apoc vortex grenade OR the DE webway portal metal dome templates - DON'T discard the packaging.

You can use it to make more of them. I did for the apoc ones.

The middle one is the original. The other two are painted packaging.

Are these large blast sized or small blast sized?

Those and the DE webway portal are ALL 3" blast sized.

I don't know if they ever embiggened the vortex grenade template as I've played ONE game of apoc and it sucked harder than a hoover.

The only non-LoW or Apoc Vortex blast in 40k (to my memory) is the Sanctic Daemonology psychic power, which is hilarious. It's still a 3" blast.

I noticed that the plastic glue label recommends wearing something akin to a hazmat suit when handling the glue. I have been using it for years and never used gloves or anything nor do I know anyone who does. ShouldI be worried for my health?

Well, there's a slight risk of gluing something together with it. Only slight, mind.

The Ork SAG can put out a large blast-sized vortex. It was fun watching a Hive Crone attempt to pick up the relic, only to be sucked up by it. I'd love to have a large one, for those rare double 6's.

Painting blaster markers would'nt be a bad idea, but if you plan on using several markers, you should buy a wiffle balls cut them in half and paint them. keeps the half sphere shape and their cheaper. Also you cant get vortex markers from gw anymore. Only get them expensively on ebay.

I would check out your local craft store for clear acrylic spheres. They often come in sizes up to 6 inches and are made of two halves, so you can get two vortex templates for around a dollar or two.

You say that I am crazy. I say that you are right!
