Get a puck of brush soap from an art supply store. Clean the brush after each session per instructions. Works well for me. Good luck, happy painting!

Cleaning with water goes a long way, IF you're doing it regularly during painting, not just after a session. Frequent rinsing avoids giving the paint time to creep up into the densely packed bristles at the ferrule and cure, which is the most frequent reason that brushes splay. Once acrylics cure, they're no longer water-soluble, so you're SOL unless you have a better solvent.
That's where brush soap comes in. Master's is my favorite and plenty of Dakkanauts would also recommend it in a heartbeat. It's effective at removing dried paint, it also functions as a tip-shaper and conditioner, it's reasonably cheap and widely available... it even smells nice (IMO, at least). Other solvents can get the gunk out (acetone, isopropyl alcohol, etc.), but they're hell on natural bristles. Dedicated brush cleaners will treat your brushes much better.

Just a note, you don't just want brush soap, but the better ones that are also conditioners as well.
The "masters" brand is an excellent brush cleaner (the one Oadie mentions).
You can get it at most craft stores.

It's also worth noting that a good quality brush is a key element to prolonging the life of said brush. A cheap, low-quality brush won't last as long, no matter how well you take care of it.
