Hi all, been a while since I have painted anything but I recently felt the itch again and decided to finally do some Thousand Sons as their concept is by far my favourite.

Unfortunately, I find the bright blue and yellow colour scheme extremely gaudy and would like to put my own twist on the styling. I am currently thinking the majority of power armour should be a very dark/worn blue or indigo. The rimming on the armour would probably be more of a worn silvery-bronze while cloaks, cloth and other accent would be a tan colour of some description.

One of the other reasons I gravitate towards Thousand Sons is due to being a first-founding legion and as a result I would like them to look appropriately ancient (just ordered some Cataphractii terminators to help with that).

I have not painted minis for years though and I am unsure what paints/inks would be necessary for such an endeavor. I also see a lot of talk of washes - is this simply referring to extremely watered down paint to glaze over a model or are there specific pots I will need of that too?

Any other colour scheme input and specific paint recommendations/tips would be fantastic before I go and spend more money

Example ideas:

(I realise those are Night Lords but that is much closer to the shade of blue I am interested in.)

(This one is a bit different but an interesting idea.)

I painted my Thousand Sons in blue-white paint scheme (ages ago) as can be seen in my gallery http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-82423-38742_Tzeentch%202nd%20Ed.%20Army.html

I cannot remember which exact colours I used (Ultramarine Blue and Skull White I know), and I drybrushed the blue with a lighter shade of blue iirc.

Ive seen this image that sticks to the traditional blue, yellow pattern, but adds red in the headdress they have. I think it helps balance the yellow out and lets you focus on the kind of blue you want.

Thanks for the responses guys but those are still much too bright for me. I found some good examples which I'll link to in the main post.

You could really put the emphasis on their "All is dust" motto and paint them in varying shades of bone, tan and brown. Maybe a hint of blue peeking out here and there but otherwise covered in sand and the dust of ages.

Weeeeellll... On the topic of thousand sons (literally, because it's a topic, about thousand sons... Hahah....), I would love to have a tutorial on the turquoise sons seen in a white dwarf issue very briefly, I can't remember what issue but I know that they had turquoise armour, black and yellow headdresses and there was a forgefiend. Those were just sexy.

Just found it, page 60, December 2013. The escelation issue. On the left of the page there is a group of thousand sons, a Helldrake an forgefiend. If anyone can make a tutorial of that, I will be infinitesimally thankful
