Subject: Tank Shock, how does it really work? Broken?

Hello!
I was reading my 40K Rulebook, and stumbled over Tank shock, (Being an IG player i got intrested)
So, the rule says that a unit that cannot move away 1 inch from the tank when it is performing a Tank Shock is automatically killed, Crunched! (BRB Page 92 bottom left part)
So, does that mean i could perform the following scenario?
G= Guardsman
E= Enemy
T= Tank
_ = Empty area, had to do it to make the picture work
GGGGGG
G______G
G______G
G_EEE_G
G_EEE_G
__TTTT
__TTTT
__TTTT
Moving the tank north, closing the gap and "Crunching" the eney units/Monstrous creature, or anything being blocked from moving 1 inch away from my tank, since they are locked in from legally standing 1" away from my units, making it look:
GGGGGG
G_TTTT_G
G_TTTT_G
G_TTTT_G
G_TTTT_G
Please discuss. Is this is as powerful (Broken?) as i think it might be?
If you dont understand my drawing, please say so and i will try to upload a clearer explanation!
Thank you!
//Smurf

It didnt change much at all from the last edition and is still pretty much useless The only way for it to work is at the final position, there is no room behind to the sides and in front of you for the models to move out from then the guys underneath are dead. the only time this will happen is with a giant blob or some flavor of impassible terrain and a board edge. for example say something like this happens E table edge I impassable G guard T tank EGGGGI > EGGGGI EGGGGI > ETTTTI EGGGGI > ETTTTI EGGGGI > ETTTTI EGGGGI > ETTTTI ETTTTI > EGGGGI ETTTTI > ETTTTI > ETTTTI > Since the tank is 4 guard wide only 4 guard can get out from under it behind the tank with a minimum of 1" away, the rest under it would die. if the impassible to the side wasn't there then 6ish more guards would live, and another 6 for the other side if the board edge isnt there Edit: Woop nvm back guardsman will die as they need to have unit coherency. but if the side was gone then they would live.

The Guardsmen belong to the same player as the tank
The E=Enemies belong to the opposing playerbeing boxed in by the Guardsmen, Example 5 space marines, boxed in by guardsmen, who you intentionally boxed in to run over, say after a deepstrike. Automatically Appended Next Post: Or a 6 wound monserous creature, or anything with wounds really

Ah sorry bout that. no the enemy can move behind the tank if the empty spot behind was filled, then only 1 row of units will pop out. the MC will be able to pop out behind the tank always. Actually the only 1 legitament time i can think of where it can kill a MC is if you tank shocked off a board edge and surounded it with guardsmen first in a box formation. (you still dont have permision to intentanally move em off board so he wouldnt be able to pop out from behind the tank.

The thing i was thinking about, they cant move throught my tank, and they can not move withing 1 inch of the guardsmen, so wont the tank "push" them through the box, thing if the guardsman box "walls" where longer.
Not trying to be a deuche here, just want to clear up the rule before i try to use it in a game

They have permission to move through the tank in the shortest distance to put them 1" away.

Alright, that sounds reasonable, it does say "Must be moved..." Guess they just climb over the ramming tank, Thanks!

It's only useful for forcing a morale test, as written it's almost impossible to actually run over an enemy unit.

What about the following:
B = Tau Broadside
T = Tank
B. . .B. . .B
. . . . TTTT
. . . . TTTT
. . . . TTTT
. . . . TTTT
--->
. . . . TTTT
B .B TTTT B
. . . . TTTT
. . . . TTTT
The rules say, a model have to move the shortest way and have to stay in formation while it keeps 1" distance to the tank. So the right Broadside would be destroyed due to being out of formation. With a long model like a DE Raider with Shock Prow you can separate single models from the unit to remove them. While this isnt worth the effort against cheap infantry, this might be hilarious against expensive units or if you can manage it to seperate a IC from a unit. In case of the IC i am not sure if it will work or if he automatically leaves the unit and counts as in formation with himself. Have to check that. But against everything else this should work or am i missing something?
If it works... think of suicide tanks shocking broadsides, carnifexes, centurions, wraith etc. to death.
Question is, what happens if you sepearte a unit containing 2 models... They both loose formation... both removed or just 1 and the last one is in formation with himself?

You don't use Tank Shocks to crunch people, you use them to force enemy models to move away. It's actually pretty useful for Guard, since with multiple tanks you can do multiple tank shocks to herd around enemy units.

Shortest distance while within coherency
hmmm okay, in the german Version is room for Interpretation how it is ment. Absolute shortest distance vs shortest distance while fullfilling the other conditions.
Can you post the exact english wording please? Thx

If some enemy models would end up underneath the vehicle.....these models must be moved out of the way by the shortest distance, leaving at least 1" between them and the vehicle whilst maintaining unit coherency and staying on the board. any models that cannot manage this are crushed.....

It's been bad forever, it's really annoying. And there's a super easy fix: Any model forced to move out of the way of a tank shocking vehicle immediately takes a dangerous terrain test.
It's not OP, there's a penalty for staying and getting run over by a tank, and it'd be fun to do.

Climbing? Try sommersaulting over it while firing both pistols into its top plate, Spectacle Shooter style. Heh.

Crunching entire units might actually work if you entirely encircle them, and then tank shock them with your skimmer-tank, since it can fly over encirlement.

from what I understand, you move the tank through each unit one by one, and it moves out of the way the closest distance it can... anything that break unit coherency is dead. You use it to cut groups in half.

Not really again.
As long as whatever was under moves to one side or the other they have done what was axed. 1" away while in coherency, shortest distance.
The guys that wasn't under have no permission to move and do not need to attempt unit coherency (until next turn anyway)
