Hey guys,

So I am a little new to painting minis and I want to have my army painted fairly quickly to a good tabletop quality.

My space marine chapter is mainly black so is it ok to just use the Games Workshop Chaos Black Spray as the base coat and then paint all the details, washes, and highlights from there?

Or do I have to paint another coat of chaos black from the paint pot on top of it? (Aside from where I have to fill in spots where the spray didn't cover)

Anyhow, feedback from you more experienced painters would be greatly appreciated

Thanks guys!

I'd expect split opinions, on this one. I've seen a number of people insist, in previous threads, that leaving the sprayed "primer" (in quotes, as we're actually talking about non-primer paint being used in the same capacity)/undercoat showing pretty much guarantees inferior results. I wholeheartedly disagree. A smooth-covering aerosol enamel, like GW's Chaos Black spray (from what I gather - I've never used it, myself), gives a perfectly acceptable finish. With a good spray paint and proper application, the results should be indistinguishable from an airbrushed basecoat, which nobody seems to see fit to rail against.

A black base, specifically, presents its own issues - namely the inability to shade down through washes. If you're willing to highlight up, exclusively, then you should be good to go. I've done the exact same thing using ColorPlace flat black spray touched up with Apple Barrel black craft paint (which just happens to match quite well) on my Orks, which wear a decent bit of black. I've generally left the black un-highlighted as a matter of expediency, but once the rest of the model is finished and varnished, there's no evidence that I took that specific shortcut - merely that I got lazy with highlighting.

For what it's worth, I say that (at least for your purposes) the plan's a good'un.

Just using the primer as the base coat is fine

Heck there is a dedicated company just for that (army painter)

You can get cheaper alternatives than GW sprays.
Try automotive primers or I hear a lot of you colonials use Krylon which I believe you can get from hardware stores

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Colonials.... Meh....redcoat.

FAST:
-Spray dark gray Krylon PRIMER (Flat/Matte finish)
-Pick out details and block out the colors (black guns, squad colored shoulders, borders etc)
-drybrush guns or whatever w silver
-flock base w PVA/water sprinkle on fine sand
-brush on min wax polyurethane (for your scheme I vote ebony)
-allow 24 hrs dry time. Hit with testors dull coat.
Done.

You could do a squad a day plus run 5 miles and learn mandarin. Real quick method. Check my salamanders or orks in my gallery. This method was used. Did an article where I desprued/assembled/painted 60 Boyz in 30 hrs.

Used masking tape for the two tone. But based in green Krylon. You get the idea.
