What's the point of Allied Detachments anymore? Seriously...

You can take unlimited detachments of any type in your army.

The CAD requires a compulsory two Troops vs. the AD's one, but if you use the second allowable Troops slot in the AD then why not just have it be a second CAD to open up additional slots for other battlefield roles (even if they don't get used)? At that point why even bother having a second Troops slot available in the AD?

Am I missing something?

No if you are not playing with any CAD restrictions . If you are it may be different.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

SImple, some times you don't want that second troop taxes. Like when you are fishing for either the HQ or one of the Heavy slots from another codex.

Armageddon, Pry System, Armageddon Sector, Armageddon Sub-sector, Segmentum Solar.

Allied derachments are just a type of detachment you can take much like a cad.

Right, but the AD allows for two Troops, so if you do take the second Troops in the AD; what would the purpose be for keeping it an AD and not just making it a second CAD? It makes no sense to me to have that second available Troops slot in the AD.

What scenario could exist to keep an AD as an AD and not make it a second CAD if both Troops slots are filled?

Look at the 'Core Detachments' chart in the 'Choosing Your Army' section of the main rulebook. Pay attention to the restrictions for the two types of detachments. It should answer your questions.

So can I take 2 cad's both from the same codex. Say to get 8 troops or five heavies and still be battle forged. Thanks

Care to elaborate?

I think you may be assuming that an allied faction is forced into the Allied Detachment which is no longer the case with 7th edition.

Yes - so long as you take the compulsory HQ + 2 Troops for each CAD (2 HQ's and 4 Troops total in this case).

Did you actually read the page in question? Why did they list restrictions in the CAD if you say that they don't apply?

Ghaz,
Can you better explain what you are trying to state, as I am unsure what you are alluding to?

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Not sure if I'm misunderstanding your question, but the point of an allied detatchment is to take units from a different codex?
Combines Arms detatchments are required to be from the same codex. So if you want to take Daemons in a Chaos Space Marines army, you can't just 'choose to make it a CAD'

JBrehaut,
I recommend reviewing the 'Selecting Detachment' section where it explains what each entry within the Detachment means, in particular the following:
Restrictions
This section of the Detachment lists any additional restrictions that apply to the units you can include as part of this Detachment.

As Jinx pointed out, this is NOT the correct rule. Only units within a CAD must be from the same faction.

It is 100% legal to have a GK CAD, Tau CAD and Daemons CAD all in the same army

Long Story short, Allied Detachments exist to only take one troop choice.

I think we all can agree that Allied Detachments with two troop choices are redundant until they FAQ that CADs "same faction" restriction is across all CAD in one army.

This is another 'reason'.... since 7th is less of a structured game and more of a 'pick how you want to play today' game... having allied detachments gives you more options as to *how* you want to play.

GW, for instance, in their tourneys are only allowing 1 CAD, and thus the allied detachments become much more important.
