So grots are fairly cheap and take up a now trivial spot in the troop section for orks.

Grots come up to something like 40 minimum...but if you want like 29 for a screen it costs ya 107 (minimum)

Is it still the case that models in front of other models gives you a cover save?

If so is it worth it to get a "screen" of grots now? Especially since KFFs are now really limited.

Whats the thinking on this? Especially now because of the formation for Waaaghing every turn.

I guess I'm just wondering...if more grots is the solution to "how do I get these guys that old cover save" and if thats even an appropriate step towards a solution.

You have the basic idea down. You put a line of grots in front of your boyz: the intervening models grant a cover save to the boyz behind (5+). The grotz are also useful in that they can take the brunt of a charge, and they can eat overwatch by charging.

I am a big fan of them and starting to use them for more than just "backfield objective grabbing". They don't help you against barrage weapons, but they are a cheap way to provide at least a 5+ against everything but ignores cover weapons.

They cover more than a KFF in the new dex would (at a cheaper cost) while providing more utility, if you position them correctly. The screen can be shot off the field due to their poor leadership, but you can either give them a character (if the boyz are right behind them, you can throw a warboss back into the boyz uinit before you get in close to krump) or just hope the runtherd is enough. Even so, every shot fired at a grot is a shot not landing into an ork, and if they shoot at the orks you retain your overwatch eating and countercharge ability, all while the boyz enjoy some cover.

They can feasibly bottleneck your army and stop the boyz from charging, but at the end of the day, I like them. Your mileage may vary; mot people are espousing painboyz.

First of all, grots are not cheap. They're quite expensive for what they got. I mean compare them to conscripts. They cost the same but conscripts have lazgunz, 5+ armor, T3, S3, Ini3 and can be made fearless for cheap.

They can work as a mobile cover save for boyz. I've used them lots and lots of times since i have a squad of those lil gobbos. But i can tell you that they're not great in that role also. Just cause they're too expensive. The only really good use for grot models is in big gunz squads or converted as grot orderlies/ammo runts.

You can homerule them to be able to join boyz squads. Put them on the frontline and eath bullets and mellee strikes with them. That's how they should work in the first place - the meatshield for boyz and not a useless separate squad.

They do run away a lot, and are embarrassingly squishy. Some players prefer to use a bare-bones boyz unit instead, protecting the more expensive boyz behind. But against shooting that would kill an ork as easily as a grot, the grots are certainly better value for the points.

Not really sure. With new mob rule it's not worth running 10 boyz no more. And grots are too expensive for their stats. Guess, you'l have to get another screen. Buggies come to mind. They seem ideal. First of all, they won't slow boyz down. There are situations when your grot screen moves 1-2 inches through difterrain thus boyz can't move further too. Buggies don't have such issues - it's not likely that you're gona have more than 1-2 stuck in DT and they can emidiately become separate units not slowing down anyone. There are issues with them getting wrecked and blocking movement and exploding at s4 but i still find them appealing.

From what I understand Vehicles block LOS, and grots wouldn't.

So I guess if you weren't inclined to shoot, it'd be ok.

Yep, another thing to consider.

Grot screening...does not even work.

Sure, you get a cover save for shooting through a unit, but anything taller then a kneeling tau is tall enough to have clear LoS that is completely higher than the highest grot, and as such does not grant any save as you are no longer shooting through the unit, but above the unit.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

it still would if you were right up the grot's ass, as theyre about half the size of normal infantry.

But that would be bad for template reasons, and once youre about 2-3" back ANY elevation or height of the gun will just look right over the grots.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

This is incorrect. The book states "Similarly, if a model fires through the gaps between models in an intervening unit, the target is in cover, even if it is completely visible to the firer. Note that this does not apply if the shots go over the unit, either because the firer has an elevated position or is firing a Barrage weapon, rather than through it.". It also says "If a target is partially obscured from the firer by models from a third unit (models not from the firer’s unit, or from the target unit), it receives a 5+ cover save in the same way as if it was behind terrain."

Being taller does not mean elevated position. In either case, you are firing -through- the grot unit, and they provide cover. It' like saying centurions or dreadnoguhts can shoot over marines. And even if you argue that, a grot is at least half the height of a boy and therefore partially obscures them. Period.

Invest those points in to walking Mek Gunz. T7 is a lot better than T2. Throw in a MegaBoss or MegaMek for 2+ Armor AND/OR 2+ LoS. Essentially you get extra wounds for your MegaX at 3 points a piece. Kannonz or Lobbas with 4 grots come out to 24 points. Keep 3 per gun or 15 close to the Mega up front and keep one A piece in back with the Gunz.

So 35 points for 11 majority T2 wounds or 24 points for 6 T7 wounds.
