I've recently developed a condition where I've lost my finer motive skills in my hands. Ive broken my neck twice in the ten years and the condition has only gotten worse, but the Docs can't pinpoint what has gone wrong.

I can't paint anymore and I can't put anything together. I've tried having a Vice hold the miniature I'm painting, but I can't hold the paintbrush for long enough or steady enough anymore.

I'm loath to sell my 40k army, but if I can't paint it, can't put new stuff together and have trouble getting to games as I can't really lift the case without considerable pain and effort, what other options are there for me?

Am I completely boned?

I've taken up playing X Wing and many of my friends have joined in too so I can get some form of gaming in.

Should I just sell up and stay with Xwing?

There are plenty of services that will assemble and paint miniatures for you, so if you're more into the gaming side you can at least pay your way out of those issues.

As for transportation, is it possible to have your army stored at your gaming location? Otherwise you could look into getting your own gaming table.

I've had to quit my job and money is a problem right now, so I can't afford paying a service right now.

Leaving the case at the store or club isn't an option as they don't want to be held responsible if it gets stolen.

Also a gaming table isn't an option either due to lack of space :-/.

It's the Kobayashi Maru, lol.

Hmmm...seeing as you are part of a club, have you thought about becoming a mentor? We have a few of those. They aim at helping new players get into the game by running games through with them, e.g. new player A vs. new player B and the mentor gives them info on rules, possible tactical maneuvers, strategies etc.

You would still be directly involved into the game, but would not have to manually move every little model and, best of all, you would help both new players and your club

What about running part of another person's army or using what you have painted as a supplemental force with another player?

Painted armies:

Orks: 11000 points
Marines: 9500 points
Khorne Marines: 2500 points
Khorne Demons: 1500 points

First off, condolences about your position, must be nasty.

Have you looked into smaller-scale games like Infinity, Malifaux, Deadzone, Dreadball or the soon-to-come out Mars Attacks? There's far fewer models involved, solving the weight issue, and if you want to get someone else to paint the models, it would be much cheaper and faster in the long term as you're talking a dozen models max rather than 50+. If you have Skirmish players in your area, that might be the way to go.

Mentoring is a very good idea. Never thought of that.

Running part of another persons army certainly an option. I play doubles occasionally. I like playing singles more, but I suppose I'd have to make a concession at this point.

Skirmish games are good. I love Skirmish games. As long as the models require next to no building and are pre painted, I'm fine. Hence X Wing. I'm getting a real kick out of that game.

Well every group has different types of people, if there is somebody who loves to paint ask him to help you. If were part of your group i would offer to help, there has to be one kindhearted dude in your meta who would help.

It was a good run.

People can be kind and just because your body is not 100% effective does not mean your mind is gone or unable to play with a bit of help and kindness from your opponent or a freind helping with movement and packing etc.

Or !maybe even kill team, think I got right one with a lot less units, someone friendly playing with you to help out abit on the physical aspects your weaker on.

There's going to be a solution out there that let's you play, and I hope you find it.

Bummer, man.

You might be able to get your FLGS to store something for you if you sign a waiver against damages or something like that. I'm sure you can negotiate your way into something.

As for the playing, assuming you can still grip minis enough to place them on the table in the first place, moving them around doesn't strictly require you to grab them. You could always make one of those little dowel pusher things, you know, like they used to use in war rooms:

Which, with a little work, would allow you to move stuff to everywhere but ruins. Even then, you could always get one of those grabber things for people who have bad knees:

Otherwise, I'd suggest playing low-model-count armies, of course. Deathwing is going to be better than green tide given the current situation.

Also, don't be afraid to ask people at your FLGS for help. I'd gladly consider helping someone get stuff painted in your case, and I'd certainly do stuff to make gaming easier ("can you check line of sight for me?" "can you just run those dudes over there for me?" etc.). Life happens, including all the bad stuff. If it's possibly making you quit, I'm sure you can get the little bits of help you need. 40k is a social activity after all, and what are friends for?

You can get movement trays such as these from e-Bay

Add to those the dowel pushers and I reckon half your worries will be gone.

As for the painting - the sign of a true wargamer is a half painted army

Thousand Sons: 3850pts / Space Marines Deathwatch 5000pts / Dark Eldar Webway Corsairs 2000pts / Scrapheap Challenged Orks 1500pts / Black Death 1500pts

Saga: (Vikings, Normans, Anglo Danes, Irish, Scots, Late Romans, Huns and Anglo Saxons), Lion Rampant, Ronin: (Bushi x2, Sohei), Frostgrave: (Enchanter, Thaumaturge, Illusionist)

I am sorry to hear about your position. I would gladly paint for you but it seems rather impractical considering the distance. Surely there is someone who could help you with moving your army from one place to another etc. This may be out of the question but have you thought of taking any pain meds?

It's really too bad that games like Confrontation: Age of Ragnorok and AT-43 are mostly defunct after Rackham went under. They both used armies as big as 40K, but with everything being prepainted and plastic. I actually got into them so I could focus on making terrain instead of assembly-line painting the generic figures that make up units, which is something I've hated for 20 years.

You can leave atliest couple of squads for kill team and mordheim and play those you dont need much ,and honestly it's more fun since each dude is special. Also you could get a box and ask some friend to asemble and paint them for rest of the box bits as a reward . I'm selling out my csm nou and probably will have to sell orks ( need money at the moment) , but I just can't stop , im alredy doing some new kill team + ork warband for mordheim

OP I am sorry for your position. I would echo exploring skirmish games, skirmish modes for 40k (since you have some models), and exploring 'clix' games. I know modeling is probably still in your system, so I would suggest lowering your painting standards and using sprays and painters tape when possible. We play with a guy who has Parkinson's and his hands are very shaky. He still paints (wife assembles them I believe) but he just lowers his standards. Fun to play against regardless.

Please keep your army and we will all hope for a solution to your predicament and a speedy recovery!

I'm sorry to hear this. If you like x-wing, and you have issues with money, you could always sell your 40k and focus on x wing.

Like john said, I'd be happy to get your minis done but with the distance between us, rather impossible. (Oh, I just remembered: I'm really bad at painting, though I have friends at my 40k club that are epic and spend about 48 hours on a morkanaut)

If you like games like that, Krosmasters is pretty fun as well, or even Heroclix, though I'm uncertain how much trouble the Clix bases will be to turn for you. Sometimes they work fine, other ones can be tricky. Not a perfect science on those things it seems D:
