So I would like to start a small force for X wing. Have a few players in the area and well I might just learn the game from them. But I want some ships first anyway.
My wish list is a small fleet consisting of rebel ships. I would rather keep away from any named heroes or characters and I love all the ships I see on the screen (X-Wing, A-Wing, B-Wing and Y-Wing).
So if someone could make me list, i'll buy them and one day rock up to the club and ask someone to teach me with them.
Cheers guys.

Since the game is generally played at 100 points you're generally going to be looking at a few different 4 ship builds. Here's some of my favorite Rebel ones using just the fighters, and only using cards from the Core set, or one of the iconic fighters you listed (A/B/X/Y).
First up, 2Y2B.
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R2 Astromech (1)
Gold Squadron Pilot (18)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
R2 Astromech (1)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Fire-Control System (2)
Total: 100
R2s are basically just there because I was at 98 and they come with the Y-Wings.
The second list is the popular XXBB, though it does include a named character, he comes with the basic starter which you should be buying anyway. Since getting the popular upgrade (Stealth Device) for him is only currently found with the Slave I expansion, I switched it out for R2-D2 for a bit of shield recovery. The Daggers could also be the Blue Squadron version of the B-Wings if you want to work the Fire Control Systems back in. Again, mostly just giving you ideas, but 2 B-Wings is probably going to be a common theme, cause they're awesome.
Biggs Darklighter (25)
R2-D2 (4)
Red Squadron Pilot (23)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Total: 100
A-Wings are the harder one to fit in. They'll be much more popular when the Rebel Aces expansion hits and they become 2 points cheaper every time you don't take a missile. But for fun, here's a AAABB list. Never tried it because I only own the single A, like the paint on the Aces one better so just holding out for buying multiple of it.
Prototype Pilot (17)
Prototype Pilot (17)
Prototype Pilot (17)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Dagger Squadron Pilot (24)
Total: 99
So, what should you buy? If it was me I would do:
1 Core Set
1 X-Wing Expansion
2 B-Wings
2 Y-Wings
1 A-Wing
If you find yourself liking the A-Wing, I would wait until Rebel Aces to grab any more of them. Of course, you also get a B-Wing from it, but as they are now it's hard to say wait on those because they're so good, and can be real workhorses of a few different lists.

So if I buy the above Im set for a decent beginners range of options?
I dont quite understand the lists yet as I know next to nothing about the rules besides what i have seen.
Cheers for the help mate.

Playing with the name characters is fun, I used not like flying with named characters, but besides their unique abilities the higher pilot skills come in handy as you play more games.
Otherwise I would say just buy one or two core sets, and least one of each ship. For multiples, get a least 1 or 2 X-wings, 2 Y- wings, 2 B-wings, 2-3 Z-95s, and stick with one A-wing until you get a feel for how they fly and then get a second if you like how they fly.
I would say that you really only need 1 HWK-290 and YT-1300 and when it comes out 1 YT-2400.
This is is all my experience, but one thing I will say is that I have fleet composition similar to what I suggested (with only 2 1 Z-95s and 1 B wing wing and no YT-2400) and I have used every ship in at least 2 games over the last year (I also play as the empire to mix it up and school and work eat up most of time along with two other gaming systems) which is nice, as nothing feels wasted in that it just sits in the case not being used. Plus I can switch up my squads pretty well and not be predicable of what I fly.

Yeah, with a Core set plus X-Wing Expansion you'll have two total X-Wings, so you'll have 2X, 2B, 2Y, 1A. If you decide to branch out after (and you should X-Wing is fun) then I would pick up the 3 Z-95s, 1 HWK-290, 1 E-Wing, and a Falcon. Eventually you'll probably find yourself trying out the named pilots, because they do add some cool interactions and gameplay options. You might also think about either a 2nd Core (for a 3rd X-Wing, plus more dice) or just picking up a pack of dice, because even with the basics there are some instances where only 3 of each won't cut it. Range 1 attacks with Bs and Xs for example, or Range 3 defense with the A-Wing.

Yea I ave seen what happens to people who enjoy this game. Their collections just keep growing haha. I do want to avoid that though and while I am sure my tastes will change after a few games I would love to just buy a small amount of models to use that i own and like the look of. For me this is always the first step to starting a game.
I may as well add some extra dice to my order when the time comes then. Anything else extra I may need when starting off?

Not really, the good thing about the game is that all the counters and what not you need all come with the individual ships. The Core set gets you the movement templates, range ruler, some counters for missions and what not, and the accessories for the 3 included models, plus a dice set. If you're playing in a group, and using the Core set templates I would recommend doing something to mark yours. I took some blue paint (I used P3, but I'm sure any you have would work) and painted the borders on mine but others have used Sharpies or other markers.

I recommend E Wings. I've played a few games now and haven't lost yet vs Imps.
They are fast, powerful, but very expensive.
Other than that, the gent who posted the list of Core, X Wing, 2 B, 2 Y and an A is spot on. It's a great core force to build on. Add to this the Rebel Aces when it's released and you won't go wrong.

Got to run an E (Etahn with R7-T1 and Predator) for the first time last night. They are fast, and maneuverable, and yeah expensive, and you can't discount 3 Red/3 Green base. Took a decent beating too, plus Etahn has that amazing ability.

Etahn is my MVP.
I like to pair him up with Corran, but it's a pricey tactic and you can't fit in much else.

I'll go against the grain here and say I don't think E-wings are that good. They just cost too much for the basic non-named units.
Yes, Etahn is powerful, but a savvy opponent will take him out as a priority, especially since the points dump there is noticeable.

Funny you should say that...
I played against a very savvy tourney player last night who used:
Turr Phennir - Stealth Device.
4 Alpha Squadron Pilots.
It took a long time, but I eventually whittled his squadron down to just Turr. By that time I had Corran with full shields, Etahn with one and Ten on two. I jammed up his guys as best I could and took shots at the fighters a little further away, but still just at range 1. I call it killboxing.
When Turr was left, it was nearly a massacre. He took out Etahn very quickly, and then managed to stay out of the arcs of Corran and Ten, until he whittled down Ten.
I took a risk with Corran on one hp, flew through an Asteroid and double shot Turr.
That was game and easily the best game I've played so far as I think I should have gotten slaughtered.
I'm currently 5-0 vs Imps, but I'm still to test vs a proper TIE Swarm, big ships and other rebels.
I'm the only Rebel player in my meta that uses E Wings, but after last night, the other two rebel players have bought one each.
They are powerful, but you need to build around them and take risks to get the most out of them. The combination of their statline and dial make them a formidable fighter.
I did get some advice from my opponent and it was definitely taken on board, but he agrees... While pricey, E Wings named characters are great. The grunts... Definitely not.
The thing I need to get better at is my own ship formations. I keep colliding with my own ships.
My opponent expects to see me at bigger tournaments soon as he thinks I have a good grasp of the game.
As for last night, I went 3-0 and got a fighter of my choice as a prize.
Not sure which to pick though... Any advice?
Edit... Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread.
