I'm new. I spent hours on painting etc, but maybe half an hour actually playing. And now I have a "problem".

The only race with "probable" looking characters for me are Tyranids. I mean, marines looks exaggerated to me. Same with Orks, Tau, and so on. And Tyranids, being pure monstrosities with little to no human traits, does not feel "weird" to me.

On the other hand, I really, really like vehicles. Not all that pseudo-gotic stuff marines glue on their tanks, but basic tank, imperial guard's tanks, most Tau work, what can I do, I'd really like to paint some.

I know I can just do it and never play them, but it seems a waste. On the other hand, mechanics and Tyranids makes little to no sense in one army at all. So how could I combine them? Genestealers comes to mind, but there is only fluff, no rules, right? I don't plan to play any official tournaments, so as far as it makes sense, it goes, and if someone will not like that, I'll have enough nids to leave vehicles in garage I'm just into painting, anyway, all I need is that "I might play it" feel

If your modelling skills are up to it, or your wallet and patience for hunting down OOP stuff, you could do a Genestealer cult using Guard rules.

If you want the best of both worlds, start a tau and a tyranid army. You'll be very happy. Too much tyranid is drab, and too much tau makes you feel like a terrible person. The only reason i suggest tau over imperial guard is purely game play. Tau skimmers are much more fun to use, as opposed to treaded tanks which cost too much real world money to die very quickly. plus, painting them is cool, like this; www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&docid=SXWg2J6M3XCrUM&tbnid=r9KhPBLJ0EHNZM:&ved=0CAMQjhw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.beastsofwar.com%2Frama%2Fminirama-scifi%2Ftau-hammerhead%2F&ei=w63HU4CPM5LxoAT1-4GABw&bvm=bv.71198958,d.cGU&psig=AFQjCNFtiquZEGQ-Qy67Q-H8EPrO6DvDeQ&ust=1405681474848847

Sounds like a plan. Any hint how they was supposed to look like? Because what I was able to find on the net was either crappy paintjobs or crappy photos (possibly to hide crappy paintjob).

feth the fluff, unbound army, Tyranids with Tanks, bring it.

For the most part, Genestealer Hybrids come in four states:

First generation hybrids are bulkier than humans, with visible exoskeletons and additional arms. They are also often purple.

Second generation hybrids are still bulkier than humans, and sometimes have additional arms - usually only one though.

Third generation hybrids are indistinguishable from humans, and occasionally show psychic potential in the form of Magoses. The only physical trait they show is that they often have purple or shark-like eyes.

Fourth generation hybrids are the same as Third Generation hybrids... or they're purestrain Genestealers.

Colour scheme wise, purple is traditional for Genestealer cults, although red is a favourite secondary colour. They may also often wear PDF (IE: guard) uniforms, and in the early stages of their uprising they will drive PDF-marked vehicles (although later on they'll customise the paint jobs to make them more Genestealery).

Yepp, genestealer cult could work if you like vehicles - just convert Guard up, paint their skin pale or purple/pink, have some weird alien brainiac model acting as the magos(primaris psyker in Guard army), you can even convert the tanks a little to add some infestation to them should you want to show it. Give your sarges genestealer/possessed arms instead of chainswords too to mark mutations and biomorphs. x)

I came to this thread and was ready to suggest that the OP give up because Nids just don't do tanks. A genestealer cult using Guard is possible and I have a thread on here somewhere where the community shifted my own ways of thinking of one and making a workable concept, but I have to agree with this. Tanks with Nid heads. A Hormagaunt with talon forward calling a charge like a Guard tank commander. It would be amazing. Please do this and naysayers be eaten.

Well I'd have fun building and playing a Genestealer Cult army, and it can be built "Tourney Legal". Just build a AM army, and toss in a "Till the Apochalypse" ally.
