Took a small hiatus from 40k painting and modeling to go back a bit to my roots. Also helps to have a bit of inspiration from playing World of Tanks and such, but long before I was into wargaming I was a collector of model tanks. Those were the first models I ever did, but it stands to reason I wasn't super great at painting or modeling. This was also a bit of an experiment as well to test the skills I gained while painting 40k and then applying those to realistic historical miniatures. Anyway, hope you like it! Starting on a decimator seige engine next and then probably splurge on another historical miniature (still deciding between a chaffee, SU-152, or F-9 Cougar).

Very neatly done, I am really enjoying the camo on the tank. And its great to see a historical miniatyre for once too here on Dakka beside pikemen, musketers, and such

Glad you like it! As far as how I was able to manage the paint scheme. Here is basically the steps that went into it:

1. Primed Black
2. Sprayed base-coat of Tamiya German Grey.
3. Nuln wash in recesses
4. Drybrush of Adeptus Grey

5. Took some white layer pain with a brush without adding water, took some of the white off on a napkin and started brushing it on the tank (so kind of a dry brush, but not quite. Basically somewhere inbetween with a little more paint on your regular brush). Basically I was trying to simulate what it would look like if a 1/35th scale miniature had a hand brush and started slapping white paint on the tank himself.

6. Once that was dry, I took my worse looking medium drybrush I had (literally it doesn't even look like a dry brush any more, just a head with smashed down bristles). I took that and started scrubbing off the white paint in areas where I would expect wear and tear.

7. Earthshade wash around the rivets and other parts and then dragged it down to represent rust streaks.

The only way I feel this method works is if you use a strong acrylic spray as your base-coat. If you were to use the same scrub method with a painted on base-coat or with an airbrushed on base-coat you would risk scrubbing that off down to the primer.

Hope that helps give an idea of what I did!

Lovely model! I have always liked the Pz III. The snow camo is very well done.

There are some nice kits for the Chaffee and the SU-152 on the market. The Tamiya SU-152 from a couple of years ago got very good reviews.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Thanks, I'll have to look into that one. I know my local hobby store has a really detailed looking chaffee by Dragon, as well as an ISU-152, but they don't currently have just the SU model (so that one I would have to order).
