Looking at starting a Tyranid army. Ive always loved the models but have found them difficult to paint in the past to a decent tabletop standard. Id like to paint hive fleet Behemoth color scheme. I usually prime all my mini's black for previous armies but I just hate the way red covers over black but I still want black or a very dark color in the recesses. Im wondering if anyone has had any luck priming tyranids Red and applying some kind of wash to them, then painting claws and all the back armor, Which again im not sure what colors/techniques to go with there either. Im pretty much just looking for any painting advise on these I can get. Thanks everyone!!

There are several ways, starting with rattle cans. Pick a can that is is the region of the right colour, Army Painter or sum such. Halfords (just noticed your flag, so automotive) grey primer is also a good place to start as it gives a nice smooth surface to paint over. For the dark recesses a wash of the correct colour or just black will do the trick in most cases.

More involved is finding a friend who has an airbrush this will make the bulk of the colouring quick and easy, have a look in my gallery for my nids (they were an early foray into the world of airbrush) and Eldar.

Youtube is also your friend as there are many painting tutorials to give you ideas and inspiration as well as tips.

You could always start out with a white or grey primer, basecoat with your red, wash the red and then go over it again but keep the dark in the recesses.
As the previous writer pointed out, youtube is your friend to learn techniques and see how other people do their thing!

Also, there are ways to make red look good on black undercoat. You can mix red ink (for example the Vallejo one) with red paint, it covers black nicely. The other technique I use is to first do some layers of white or yellow on black undercoat, and only then cover the whites with red paint or red ink. This makes red nice and vivid.
