I'm looking to get into one of the dystopian wars games. Both legions and wars interest me for different reasons. Wars because of it's vast difference to 40k as well as the existence of my preferred faction (Italy). Legions appeals to me because of the models, scale and cheap entry price. Despite the lack of Italians in legions the FSA do look great, aside fr their apparent balance issues. Rumours say there's three new factions in the works and some proper rulebooks being announced soon as well. Anyway I have a few questions for any veterans.

How playable is the Italian naval group out of the box compared to those of the major nations?

Have the 2.0 DW rules been released or are they still on pre order?

For players of both games, which do you prefer and why?

Thought for the day

Hey Las!

-The Italians are quite good out of the box, as it were. They can more than hold their own against the "core" nations, and if you decide you want some variety later on, you can always work up an allied fleet.

-The DW 2.0 rules are indeed out, I've got a detailed review up as well as a few other articles on my blog:

-As for DW versus DL, I can't speak directly for DL since I haven't played it. The minis are quite nice for both games, but there is less selection in DL. Plus, you might find it more difficult to find players for DL. Part of the problem is that there are a lot of 28mm skirmish games out there, where as DW is the only steam-punk naval game! My recommendation would be to go with DW, but YMMV.

I have not had the chance to play DW 2.0 yet (got my copy on Friday), but I have played a few games of the new FSA rules, so I have pretty high hopes for DW to be a solid rules system.

I suspect that finding players for DW will be easier than for DL, so there is certainly that to consider.

My official faction choice is "All of the above"

I haven't played or read v2 yet but I have played 1.0, 1.1, and 1.5. Also played a tiny bit of Legions when it was still in beta. I've soured on DW, the first 3 books were poorly written/edited and they did a bad job of introducing new factions. I do still really like armoured clash though, I've got a plan to rewrite it for 6mm ww2 on the back burner somewhere.
Legions was interesting but I wouldn't want to say much without giving it a proper playthrough, especially as I haven't tried the final rules.

I think Legions is due an update but I don't know what's in the works apart from the imminent Firestorm and DW releases (new sculpts for one of the ally factions for Firestorm and Indian Raj for DW).

With 2.0, they redid all the 'core nations' rules at once, and have now released all the 'minor nation' rules at once too, which would include the Italians. There have been several rebalanced and reworks (for things like the small flyer tokens especially, has been completely redone) to the 1.1 versions of the rules. The main rules for each nation is in a PDF on their site with the whole faction, so if there's an update with a new unit, that will be updated and you can download even if you don't get the model you can see what's about.

You should really give 2.0 a look! Spartan has made some significant leaps with its rules organization, balancing, and playtesting, with the result that he 2.0 version is a MUCH tighter and easier to understand book.
