I was wondering if anyone could recommend great 15mm scale games/systems/miniatures that aren't WW2 or historicals in general?

I've always been a genre guy and prefer my sci-fi and fantasy, but haven't seen nearly any 15mm games of the sort... certainly not ones widely discussed. I was looking to add a 15mm game to my hobby time, and am thinking if I can't find anything else, it might end up being FoW simply out of lack of options??

Hail Caesar just started being played by my gaming group.

The is playable at almost any scale, so long as the bases are the same, especially the frontage. This has allowed them to play at 15mm with the wide variety of 15mm historical models.

Compared to other "mass battle" style games, the game has a lot of interesting movement and flow to it. It's nothing like the ridiculous and complicated slow wheeling and turning you see in WHFB.

The Hail Caesar books also cover a wide period, basically anything before the widespread use of gunpowder, so if there's historical faction you want to play, it's likely there's a list for it.

There are probably other games of the scale that are just as good, but so far this is the only one I've experience first hand.

No no... I mean, best 15mm game that is neither WW2 or historical in general. IE something fantasy/sci-fi. :-)

Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Whoops!

Okay, well that's my fault because I'm operating on 2 hours of sleep.

Anyway, Gruntz is a good game to start with. It's a generic rules set, and there's a lot of good scifi stuff coming out. I haven't played it, but I only hear good things.

Dropzone Commander is 10mm, but a very good game, and it looks like 10mm is going to see a lot of action overall.

Otherwise, I can't think of any other good scifi games. I haven't been able to do anything fantasy related in that scale.

Although Hail Caesar would probably make a great base for a fantasy game as well. I'm pretty sure that somewhere out there someone has modded the rules for generic fantasy gaming.

I do know a game called Armies of Arcana was designed pretty much as a WHFB clone, but in 15mm and streamlined. Look into that game, although it's old and I'm not sure who owns the game now.

Gruntz is a great ruleset. Well playtested and developed. I haven't had a chance to play yet, but it looks really well done.

Among fans of 15mm there's much less required connection between games and rules. Folks find a set of rules and match it to a set of miniatures they like best and there are a dizzying array of miniatures and rules.

Gruntz, Tomorrow's War, Future War Commander, Fubar (free fan set), Alien Squad leader are all sci-fi rulesets designed with 15mm as an option.

For Fantasy, Kings of War is a great choice. Though it claims to be designed for 28mm, it reads like a 15mm unit-base ruleset.

If you want to go skirmish, Song of Blades and Heroes is designed for both 28mm and 15mm and includes measurements for both. The classic HotT (Hordes of the Things) is written for 15mm. Rebel Miniatures makes the 15mm ruleset (and miniatures to go with it) Mighty Armies. Splintered Light also makes miniature sets intended for the game.

It's really hard to list all the options. Places like TMP and Lead Adventure have alot of 15mm fans that can point you in the right direction.

A few other companies to check out for 15mm minis and rules
Rebel Minis
Khurasan
15mm.co.uk (many 15mm minis and rules)
Splintered Light Miniatures
Ground Zero Games
Blue Moon Miniatures
Essex Miniatures
Peter Pig

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have plenty to read up on, but Grunts is sounding like a contender.

Meanwhile, I must say, I miss Arcane Legions and wish it had stuck around longer. Its true I found my way to it VERY late in its life, but being able to be thousands and thousands of points, of every faction, for peanuts, was really nice. It was a really fun, albeit basic little system too.

I always thought Mighty Armies would be an interesting trip into 15mm scale, as a force is pretty inexpensive for what you get.

You have to know these 15mm games are not so popular as 28mm games. Make sure you have a group ready to play and don“t end up with no one to play as it happened to me with Future War Commander.

Keep up the fight!

There are plenty of 15mm sci-fi and fantasy miniatures out there but I can't think of any sc-fi/fantasy games that are specifically 15mm with the exception of AQOTMF.

I think most people use 15mm sc-fi/fantasy minis with rule-sets that are designed for 28mm minis. Not that there is anything wrong with that, it's great way to save money and space.
