Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
With the new models coming out soon, and looking exceptionally awesome, I was looking at buying a box of Desperate Mercenaries to add into my Guild lists, either Sonnia or Justice. My question is, are hey worth it given the extra merc tax of +1SS? Also, I'm considering setting up a Lucius crew as/when I can find a him separate on Ebay or the new box comes out. For the list, I'm thinking about going for a heavy focus on long/mid range, and including Riflemen, Death Marshalls and Guild Guard as the mainstay. Anyone got any tips or ideas on the best ways to set this up?

Guild lists don't really need merc gunslingers: they've got a ton in-faction already, so, no, unless you have a plan that very specifically uses their abilities, I wouldn't go out of faction for them due to the tax.

Good to know. I might pick them up anyway just because the models look awesome, but I won't expect too much from them. BEtween the Death Marshalls, Riflemen and possibly Guild Guard, I think I'll have shooting covered.

If you are going with Lucius, here are some models I recommend:
- Guild Guard and Riflemen (Of course)
- Captain Dashel (Currently the Drill Sergeant model), he lets any Guardsmen take a Focus action as a (0) Action, which means that Riflemen (who don't lose unused focus tokens) become even nastier.
- 1 or 2 Beatsticks. Lucius shouldn't be all minions; a nasty beatstick like a Peackeeper, The Judge, Sidir, and Francisco also love free (1) Actions. (Note: Sidir and Francisco can buff Wp, which is quite helpful with Lucius crews.
- Witchling Stalkers (1 or 2, usually). If you fail the Horror Duel from Lucius's Commanding Presence, you become paralyzed. Witchling Stalkers help to negate that by being able to remove the effect.
- Guild Lawyer. Reminder of a Worse Fate gives nearby models a + to Horror Duels, creating easy synergy with Lucius, making Commanding Presence more reliable.
- The Scribe. Lucius's Totem. He's decent and a good target for Lucius's Devil Deal, being able to take 2 hits of it before dying. Personally, I prefer the Governor's Proxy with Lucius.
- The Governor's Proxy. All he does is heal. He's rather slow, but Lucius can speed him up easily (just by taking a walk action!). He can heal back damage on your models, preventing Lucius from running out of minions, and is a great way to replenish what damage you dealt through Devil's Deal.
- A Death Marshal. I'm quite a fan of how useful Pine Box is. You can speed up or save a friendly model, or completely shut down your opponent (it's especially hilarious if you get Nicodem or Ramos in there, because it can completely ruin your opponent's plan and give you an edge to get some more scheme markers out. I like to take one in just about every crew.
- Mimics. I don't own any (because that would just cause me to start a Neverborn collection...), but Beckoners, Mr. Graves, Mr. Tannen, and the Doppleganger are all great options if you want to take this path.
Upgrades: I always take Secret Assets (It's a ranged attack and the only (0) you will have with Lucius, so you can use it quite often) and Legalese (because you can completely screw over an opponent by swiping his or her scheme markers).
Hope that helps!

Yep, very helpful, thanks. I already have the Marshals, the Judge and the Witchlings, so a box of Riflemen and a box of Guard (maybe with Captain if I can get hold of one) should get me a new crew going without much hassle. Cheers.

If you're willing to wait, it may make more sense to get a metal copy of lucius and play with what you've got, and then get the full plastic crew when it comes out, since it'll probably cost you more now and there are some models that don't exist or are somewhat problematic (ex: dashel is equipped like the old second generic guild totem but the box art makes him look like the current guild captain)

If I find a copy of the current Lucius, I can probably try to throw together a list from what I have without too much trouble. I'll probably grab some riflemen as I want them for painting and maybe to throw in with my other crews. But it makes sense to wait until the plastic set for the rest ( I imagine the Lucius box will probably have Guard in it?)

It will (hopefully) have another special Guild Guard model (the one from his metal set is my favorite of every Guild Guard so far). The plastic Guild Guard should be available for purchase by Gencon as well. Most likely, his set will now include The Scribe, but will lose Ryle (the new Hoffman box will have him, I hope, if it ever comes out).
