I may actually convince a buddy of mine to commit and start an Ork army. Maybe build a 500 pt army and see how he likes it.
Problem is, this is after Gee- Dubs took down the battleforce for Orks (if I am wrong about this, please tell me, but I don't See it anymore) and now the only bundle deals are those terrible things where they bundle useful units with err.... less useful units to force the kits that aren't best- sellers on you.
Is there an easy way to build an Ork army anymore? I just want some Boyz and a Warboss, maybe something else for variety. Does anything like this exist? is an old Assault on Black Reach set worth tracking down on E-bay?
Help!

I went to Hershey Park in central PA this year, and I have to say I was more than a little disappointed. I fully expected the entire theme park to be make entirely of chocolate, but no. Here in America, we have "building codes," and some other nonsense about chocolate melting if don't store it someplace kept below room temperature. |

Ork armies are the exact opposite of cost effective. All the models are Cheap points wise but cost roughly the same dollar wise. Just look at boys they are 30 dollars for between 60 and 100ish points while a SM tact squad is 40 for 150-250. Same goes for all thier models. It is the only race where you can see the ratio of one dollar to each point in models.
Though luckily its orks and you can save tones of money by being creative and artistic in conversions. Just google it. Many gamers have made amazing alternate models (especially vehicles) from childrens toys and other company models (like WW2 replicas).
Ide say if you can get your hands on some Assult on black reach sets you can make a decent list from that. Convert the nobs to meganobs and the deffKoptas to Warbuggies with rokkits (via plasticard).

Orks and tyranids are probably the most expensive armies in 40k. If you're looking for a cheap army, grey knights are MUCH cheaper per point and definitely more competitive.

If you want to cost effectively play orks, Ebay and the Dollar Store are going to be where you get most of your models. Via Ebay you can get heaps of boys for relatively cheap, and often times you can get -more- than that for relatively cheap. For example I got 100 boyz, 20 nobz, 2 battlewagons, a trukk, and a couple of bikers + koptas for 220$. It was a steal, and it's super rare you'll see anything like that. Regardless though, Ebay (or a similar place like barter-town) is where you will want to get most of your actual Ork models. In the box a Boyz costs 3 USD a head + tax, but you can often get them for between .50-1.00 USD per head in an auction.
Dollar Stores are where you'll want to get most of your vehicles. You can find cheap plastic toys there which will run you, at most, about 10$ a piece for one. Apply some bitz + plasticard and you can make Ork vehicles and guns (which run between 40-70 USD respectively) for a tenth of that.
I realize I didn't say anything about army composition, but I feel this is more important. Price things first, then decide if it's worth it. 40k is not a particularly cheap hobby even if you do go thrifty and be smart about it, and Orks are one of the most pricy if done poorly.

Look for people who bought Stormclaw and want to get rid of their Ork bits. Same goes for Black Reach, although that's been a while so there might not be many of them laying around anymore.
Do that and what morganfreeman said and you could be looking at an Ork army for cheap.

Assault on Black Reach orks are actually really cheap - often £5 or $8 for 10. I've seen 10 go for 99p occasionally.
Buy 40 or 60 , then get a box or two of boyz if you want a shoota mob.
In the past you needed to convert the AOBR boyz to give them shootas - now that's not so crucial, and once you have 40 or so AOBR with sluggas, you have the makings of a green tide.
Look out for Ghazgull s/h.. we got ours for £4, his bosspole needed repair.
Once you've got the boyz all painted, you will have probably saved up more $$$ as it takes so long!
We bought Stormclaw for the Killa Kans, but I honestly wouldn't bother if you're starting an army, they're not the core of an army.
Once you have the boyz, most people would recommend a bunch of trucks or battlewagons. Again, if you're on a budget, buy s/h rhinos and use them as Looted Wagons. If you need the rules from White Dwarf, PM me, I'll email you them.
Finally, once your boys are painted, what's the standout, best fun, best value LoW in 40k? A stompa!

You can find on ebay WHFB Orc warriors $10-15 for 20. They are the same size as space orks. Look at bitz lots of weapons and give your fantasy orcs sluggas or shootas making them orks of the future. AM heavy weapons and tau crisis suit weapons work great for lootas.
You should probably buy a box or two of boys. This will help your converted boys blend in. If you are going to do a lot of converting then be sure to keep every bit that you get. You will always have extras in every kit. These go along way to making fantasy stuff and other armies weapons look more orky. Especially if you plan on converting/looting vehicles.

Conversions and spare parts are LIFE for an Ork player. The dozer blade of a Trukk, for instance, makes a superb gun shield. Take a spare arm from a Killa Kan, grab a gun, or at least something vaguely gun-LIKE, from your bits bin, gather up some spare Grots (Not tlike you'll be fielding an actual unit of 'em) and boom, you have yourself a Big Gun.
Ork armie are all about the kitbashing and spare parts fall out of the sky for them. Most of your gear will come from ebay, but picking up, say, a pair of Trukk Boy boxes (A discount from getting boys + Trukk) will stock you up on extra parts, that can then be used for those cheap pick-ups for bashing. Nob boxes *drip* with spare parts, while the Trukk box can be turned into almost anything. These are things that you'll always want to have laying around.
But it'll never be TRULY cheap. Orks just can't manage that by their very design.

Mantic miniatures sells space orks called marauders they're a bit more proportionate then normal gw orks so i'm not sure if they will appeal to you. They should be a good amount cheaper then gw orks but may lack options so choose carefully.
