For 35 pts you're paying for eternal warrior and adamantium will.

How important is this when at T5 the only thing which will be instant deathing you is strength 10 (pretty rare) and force weapons?

It's the extra kick in the teeth, really. Nothing about a Chapter Master is really "necessary". Okay, rant done.

I would say it's useful since even at T5 you can still be instant-deathed, and you might as well protect him at all costs anyway. Plus there are weapons that are straight up Instant Death anyway, like the Swarmlord, or the Murder Sword.

There are other things, too, like smash attacks and instant death special rule weapons.

I mean necessary is a poor word choice I think, because is it necessary to what end? Playing him effectively? Well no in some situations and yes in others.

ANYWAY, its a luxury item. With an escort squad he is survivable enough, give it to him if you have the points but he can still do everything he does without it.

On a Bike HQ? Not particularly mandatory since most armies don't have many S10/ID shots and their players don't always take them (Tau railguns). You should be picking your melee fights, so you can see when opponents have Smash or Force weapons.

If you weren't a Bike HQ, I would say it is almost mandatory due to T4.

I rarely use it on mine, a regular storm shield has done me well. The big things that are Strength 10 die before I get into combat anyways, or at least thats the plan.

look at it this way; those 35 points are keeping your 250 point model from dying in one shot.

It isnt mandatory, but would you pay 35 points to ensure your Land Raiders or Storm Ravens could never die in one hit?

Depends on your opponent, and whether you think you can spend those 35 points better somewhere else. If you find yourself regularly facing S10 or instant death attacks, or if you are being targeted by spells, then the shield eternal is a good buy. For a TAC list, it's an important piece of insurance for a very expensive model.

The answer depends on how much you want to protect your investment. The answer to that depends on how much you've already spent on your investment.

It's like buying a Ferrari. If you're gonna go ahead and spend the 50 grand to get one, why cheap out and stick with the factory speakers and non-power windows? If you're going to go big, go big.

By comparison, if you just have basically a naked chapter master on a bike then no, the shield eternal probably isn't necessary. However if you've already got him decked out in enough gear to potentially go toe-to-toe with units packing strength ten, don't cheap out on the one wargear that would actually allow him to do so.

Without sheild eternal my Chapter master is only 210 points. I stick him in a unit of CS bikes and if im shot with strength 10, I look out sir onto the bikes.
