I could use your opinion in deciding which army to go with. I think that I have a general idea of how both armies work. I like the visual style of both armies though currently I am leaning more towards eldar.
My friend plays Orks and Imperial Guard so you can factor that into your opinion if you want.

I just really need some help picking.

Thanks.

Eldar are fun and have a very artistic asthetic to their look.
Necrons are scary robot tomb kings in space with that asthetic going for them.

Your friend plays 2 armies that relay on horde like numbers and lots of dice.

I feel that Necrons might be a better choice competitively with them especially warrior spam since they can get back up again a lot of the time as long as the whole squad isn't dead.
For that you can get Akar's and others help in the list section.

Eldar against those two armies if going to be better off with (the much hated) Wave Serpent spam just for the sheer fire power / durability it has.

Just depends on what you want to buy / play however as both are good solid armies at present.

Welcome to the 40k hobby and good luck in your battles with your buddy.

Thanks, I think thats a great break down of both reasons.

What about in terms of painting? Im worried that Necrons wont be as diverse in troops and painting techniques that the Eldar might have. In addition the Necrons seem to be a really slow army. Is this true?

Eldar do have a lot more variety in troop specializations. Which necrons don't necessarily need. Being able to handle troops and vehicles with the same basic infantry. That allows more paint schemes with eldar, but necrons still have some awesome specialist units, praetorians, wraiths, death marks, and lychguard that you can make your own with some different styles.

As for being slow, that is a common misconception with necrons. They have the ability through multiple units to get around the board quickly, and be much more durable than their typical counterparts.

It seems you want to play Eldar, and you are looking for people to verify your opinion.

Instead, verify it yourself by taking some further looking into the diverse and interesting models and lore of the Eldar.

What I see in common between the two races is that they are two races of old that made mistakes and are grasping at the greatness that their empires once owned.

Makes sense, thanks.

I think I would go with necrons 100% but I just really want to be able to paint beautiful models and I cant find a paint scheme for Necrons that I've been wild about.

Well hey, Eldar were one of the reasons Necrons went to sleep. They've been hating eachother for millions of years. Lol

Ill look into them but Im kind of tired of painting power armor. I have played eldar a long time ago, and they do have some beautiful models but they tend not to be as fun and kind of OP.

For Necron paint schemes, check this out

You can go with any metallic color, really, and deviation is always an option.

As stated above the idea that Necrons are slow is a misconception. Typically the slowest units are the troops which will be the bulk of the army list. However stick them in nightscythes or ghost arks and they can nip round very quickly.

Annhilation barges (always take three) are pretty quick aswell, move them 12" and you'll be snap firing all it's weapons, however with the tesla weapons you are really aiming for the sixes anyway, with four s7 twin linked shots from it the likelihood of rolling those sixes is pretty high. And with the tesla weapons every 6 rolled gives you another two auto hits. For instance last night I rolled four sixes when I fired the s7 tesla destructor giving me a total of 12 s7 hits. My opponents face just dropped. Added with the chance of the shot arcing into units within 6" (enemy and friendly though) and causing D6 s5 hits is also a bonus.

Necrons excel at firepower but their range is somewhat limited with most weapons having a max range of 24" but when they hit....boy they can do some damage.

The Canoptek wraiths are real quick aswell, moving 12" and ignoring difficult and dangerous terrain means they can get to where they need to be in a couple of turns, and in some cases be engaged end of turn one literally murdering whatever they engage with.

I understand what you mean about paint schemes and it was an issue I had at first, I painted mine in the Nikhilakh dynasty colours then realised bright colours don't suit them so re-painted them. With all the energy sources they have and glowing orbs and lights you can get quite funky with the colours. Just plan out the colour scheme first and paint a few tester models.

As for Eldar...bah...too fiddly and spindly in all honesty for me, great army and currently probably top of leader boards but nothing says the grim dark future like an army of galaxy domination obsessed soulless angry toasters AKA Necrons!

I prefer Necrons personally, but I also see Eldar as a perfectly valid choice. I can see how it can be a tough choice. You can't really go wrong, though.

If I collected Necrons, I would probably go for a colour scheme like that and that.

The problem is, that likely there's little variance between units and single models in a Necron army. You just paint them all the same way (even if it's a cool way) and that's it.

Necrons deal well with armored AND unarmored IG so thats one thing to consider. their basic troops can wipe tanks at range. Eldar rely on Psychic Powers for some builds, maneuverability for some and on others, pure unadulterated firepower. they can assult, they can shoot... they do everything well, but are far more squishy as a rule. So if you're generally not the sort that happily removes models (permanently) from the table, I'd recommend Necrons for reasons of temperament.

Understand that Necrons generally ONLY shoot. their assault builds are NOT cheap. However the Scarabs are one option and the Scarab Farming is another. Both not so cheap but can be highly effective if your enemy doesnt know how to run away from danger.

Necrons are way easier to paint so theres that.

good luck.

Well, this is a tough decision. I play both armies at the tournament level.
Basically, you can't go wrong.
