This fact totally escaped me as I was playing my last game. Anyone have a good rule of thumb for determining what to roll in close combat? (Keep in mind this is coming from a Tau player)

I'd sum it up this way:

- it's generally 4+ except in the following cases
- attacker's WS is higher than defender's WS: 3+
- defender's WS is more than double than the attacker's: 5+

Edit: oh, and I do not think that changed at all.

As far as I am aware nothing changed...

Generally, most things hit other things on 4's. The exceptions being if your WS is at least one point better you hit the foe on 3's. The only time you will ever hit a target on 5's is if their WS is double your own plus one (so WS 2 vs WS:5+ WS:3 vs WS:7+ and WS:4 vs WS: 9 or 10).

WS: 5 or higher never needs worse than a 4 to hit. Also, the only time you will ever need a 6 to hit in close combat is if the target is under invisibility, otherwise even a WS:1 model hits on 5's vs WS: 10.

Nope, still the same since 3rd edition. And the rules Murenius laid out are accurate.

It makes units with WS 9 or 10 fairly valuable (and very rare) since they're one of the few units that standard MEQ need 5+ to hit in combat.

Actually the only exception to this rule is if your WS is 2, if your WS is 2 you hit on a 5+ against someone with WS 4. (unless an FAQ changed this.)

Its acctually pretty simple.

If your WS is higher you hit on 3+

If your WS is Double +1 over your opponent he hits on 5+
