A buddy and I are thinking of getting into x-wing and I've got a few queries.
We're going to buy two starter kits.. he wants the rebel stuff and I want the Imperial.

1. I assume there are no dumb rules that say you cant have imperial vs imperial or rebel vs rebel?
- I'm a little turned off by only having two factionrs. I'm not a big x-wing guy, but I love the look of the new rebel freighter. Some of my favourite star wars lore was always about the smugglers and their crazy ships.

2. On that note... what is the viability of a single ship like? Is it possible to just buy a milenium falcon and play it? Would be be at all decent?
- one of my main concerns is that I've read that things like TIE swarms are pretty top notch. The mechanics look awesome, love star wars.. but as the game expands with these cool new ships I worry that they're pretty much like 40k Apocalpyse units (albeit afforadble to purchase ha). something pretty for a shelf that never gets used.

Can someone explain the game a bit from a competitive and also casual setting? Are the missions fun? if you buy the big Tantive ship, I assume you wouldnt play it in a tournament.. but is it something fun for at home? etc.

If I want to buy the new freighter and come up with my own smuggler, can I just make a beat up little smuggler fleet?

Lastly... what the heck is the point of the imperial shuttle? It looks totally useless haha.

Thanks for the enlightenment!

oh, and maybe a word on points values?

The new Decimator looks awesome.. any ideas how many points itll be? Again, is it something I could use in regular games or am I limited to TIE fighters :(

1. Imp vs Imp and Rebel vs Rebel are fine, and happen often. In the local tournament I played in last weekend I flew Rebels and played against Rebels in all my games. As to lack of factions, the game is based on the time period of the original Star Wars movies. In those movies it was the Empire (and their agents) vs the Rebellion. While people often try to give reasons for a shoehorned in 3rd faction, it always comes off as wish listing in a way to take ships from both.

2. Depends on the points involved. In tournament play you're looking at 100 point games generally. The highest base cost of a single ship released thus far is Han Solo at 46 points (the Decimator has a pilot that will match that cost). This is about the equivalent of 4 basic Tie Fighters (lowest ones cost 12 points). I would however give a slight edge to the Tie fighters in that fight. As to the rest of this one, I'd forget every jaded thought you have about 40k when you approach X-Wing. All the units have uses (even the big ships), all the units are worth picking up for more than just cool shelf ornaments (though that's how I started my collection), some may see less play than others, but there is nothing in the game that is outright a bad purchase. Keep in mind that the epic ships (so far the Rebel Transport and the Corvette) have their own format that is balanced around 300 (solo) - 400 (team) point games.

I've never played any of the missions, even during casual play. I've pretty much stuck to 100 point games. There are epic format tournament rules, so you could potentially play the Corvette in one, but it is more likely something you'll use in casual epic games with friends. Corvette has some cool crew cards for the regular game, if you get a chance to buy one on the cheap C-3PO pairs up with a Falcon nicely.

You can make a "smuggler" fleet using generic pilots, the one that comes in the Falcon set is even called Outer Rim Smuggler. If you want to say they're named something else that's up to you, but there are no rules for making your own pilots.

Shuttles are one of the best point for point ships in the Empire/The Game. For 21 points (this is same cost as the lowest cost X-Wing) you get a ship with 3 attack dice, 5 hull/5 shields, 2 crew slots, a System Upgrade slot, and a Cannon slot. That's a lot. This article has a pretty good run down of the popular shuttle builds.

Edit - You are only limited to Tie Fighters if you choose to be. The Corvette and the Transport are the only two things released so far that aren't part of regular play.

I am relatively new to X-wing but I have read a bunch and watched people play and videos so ill give it my best shot, ill also explain some things a bit out of order from how you posted your questions at it will make things more clear and easier to understand.

Firstly the link to the FFG X-Wing support page where you can download the rules for free and find some videos about how the game works.

1. its perfectly fine to have blue vs blue games. As you said, with only 2 factions you are bound to fight your own side and this is very common in the tourney scene.

2. typical casual and competitive games are 100 points there are "epic battles" which are the X-Wing version of Apoc those start at 300 points. This is where you would be using your Tantive.
2a. Lists are formed by choosing the pilots you want to use, each pilot shows which ship they can fly, each pilot has a point cost. Each pilot shows which upgrades they have access to and then you can choose to add any single upgrade from each category. Each upgrade has a points cost which also gets added to reach 100 points.
2b. Just like in 40k there are special unique pilots that you can only have one of per list, each ship usually has 3 unique pilots and 3 generic pilots. Unique pilots will have special things they can do while generic won't. It is possible to run a double Milenium Falcon or triple Bounty Hunter list in both normal and competitive games.

If you google a bit for x-wing tournament lists you will see a huge variety in lists. Some take large ships (smuggler/bounty hunter) and some take small ships. What I found to be very interesting is that unlike most table top games there is a bit of a lack of power creep. Many of the top nationals lists used lists that could be made with only purchasing multiple starter boxes.

some ships like the shuttle are support ships, they take the hits while your killy ships stay alive and do their own thing.

I have yet to run missions so I cant really comment on those but if you look on youtube there is a video of Seth Green and his wife playing a team mission game of X-Wing.

thanks guys, thats good to know.
if only the two big ships are out of bounds then that's cool.

i was worried it was really x wing vs tie fighter and nothing else gets used. glad to hear that's not the case

I have played some missions like epic with big ships. We also did a shuttle mission. While fun I still like the smaller games. Though would be highly recommending of 150pt games.
The best part of casual in our games is not having to worry about upgrade cards. I f you have them or borrow fine , but we don't make a big deal about it.
