Beer fan here. I used to love extra-hoppy stuff but am aging into heartburn issues. My favorite beer has been Newcastle for quite some time. Fortunately it is a non-heartburn-y beer. But variety is the spice of life.

Any recommendations for great beer on the "easy on the stomach" side of the hops spectrum?

I've always been a fan of Wheat Beers. It's what actually got me out of the "beer tastes horrible" stage. Blue Moon is everywhere and isn't really the best example, but it's good enough to see if you like it. Shock Top is another variation on the same thing.

Alternatively you can always try hard cider. That stuff is good.

Probably work

There's a surprisingly good local brew scene in St. Louis. I'm not sure how available these are outside of the area, but you might try:

Ferguson Pecan Brown Ale.
Civil Life Brown
Schlafly India Brown Ale (I think it's the India Brown anyway...)

As far as things available almost anywhere, it's hard to go wrong with Smithwicks.

I find Guinness to be very forgiving on the stomach. I'm mainly into Good (i.e. premium) Lager though.

Just had a Crabbie's ginger beer. Not too bad and pretty easy for a beer, more like ginger ale.

I'm not sure what makes a beer mellow, exactly?

I like Blue Moon, that seems pretty mellow. I also love Angry Orchard.

My regular, go-to beer is Corona, but I am pretty sure that's not mellow - the obligatory lime does give it a bit of bite.

I like stouts, porters and ambers.

Alaskan Brewing Company's amber is pretty top notch and very mellow.

Angry Orchard is easily my favorite cider.

I have recently cut back on beer and cider because, as I'm aging, it's sticking to my gut more rapidly!

But when I do drink beer, I like a good Stout. Guinness is pretty good.

I'd much rather have a bourbon. This one, in fact!

I prefer Newcastle on tap, Rolling Rock for social gatherings, and Angry Orchard for sitting around the house being lazy.

Now if the aim is to get drunk, I prefer just vodka until the room is spinning sufficiently.

I'm totally in the same boat. I used to love all the super-hoppy IPA stuff, but I've been gradually wanting more laid back, mellow sorts of beers.

Devil's Backbone - Vienna Lager

My serious go-to when I just want an excellent easy drinking beer. Excellent flavor, and just a great all around beer. They're based in VA, so depending on your locale I don't know if you can find em'.

Beck's Sapphire

They go on about how special Sapphire Hops are and all this whatnot, but I don't care, it is just a great beer. Kinda malty, very smooth, goes down easy. Certainly one of my favorites.

And of course Guinness... if you can dig the taste. I certainly call it mellow, but not everyone agrees with me there.

That's because it is alcoholic ginger beer, not beer.

Point is, it was tasty and different and gave me a good buzz.

I love blue moon as well. Their summer wheat beer is REALLY good, I have a six pack of that sitting in my fridge as we speak lol. Another good "easy going down beer" is honey brown. Only a few stores near me carry it, but it's surprisingly good for the price. Nice 'n sweet.

I had this stuff called Milk Stout by Left Hand Brewing Company and I swear I think it's my new favorite stout. Smooth creamy perfect carbonation level, doesn't have the bitterness of a Guniess (which I like as well).

They're out of Colorado and I got it in Virginia so they have national distribution. If you see it give it a try.

Damnit, I keep seeing that beer and I'm like, "Naaaaaaah." Only because the phrase 'Milk Stout' kinda turns me off. Something about cream and alcohol just makes me queasy.

But damnit, I'll give it a try.

I've had their Sawtooth Nitro, which is excellent. Great ale. The Nitro version is a little flat, but pretty good. I guess the little nitrogen capsules Guinness puts in their cans are expensive.

On that note, the bottled Guinness is now CO2 rather than nitrogen. And it is BALLS. Only get Guinness in the can.

...I also keep forgetting Guinness has two N's in it.

Guinness on draught, man. Also, milk stout doesn't have milk in it, so don't worry!

I can't stand Crabbies. It's far too sweet and I like Rekorderlig Ciders.

Totally agree on Guinness.

I'd recommend Belhaven Best for a nice pint.

Go to a beer joint that has beer flights/samplers. You can try a number of different types of beers (3 oz each) and see if any appeal to you. It's also possible that you just don't like beer. Try wine and/or hard liquour instead.
