Subject: Ork MegaNobz and You! Your thoughts.....

Tough-as-Nails Ork Boy

So I just bought a set of Meganobz. Been on the fence for a long time, but my will power broke down at the store yesterday. My plan is to run them in a trukk or a battlewagon to compliment the other fast moving parts of my list. Since the new codex I've been migrating to smaller more mobile units, fielding more elites for once with a lot of heavy support, and I think a 3 man unit of these will work out great, but as I was putting them together, I ran headlong into a problem. Originally I was going to keep them as cheap as possible (3 ManZ with a Bosspole runs cheaper than 12 boyz in 'eavy armor with a Nob w/PK, which is basically what they are replacing in my list) but then I saw the kobi skorcha bits. Looking at the way they go together, I might try throwing a magnet in there tomorrow, but failing that I can't decide if it is worth adding 15 pts to the unit for all time, just for the sheer cool factor of dropping 3 heavy flamer templates on something before you smash into it. (god I love flamers...wait....nm)
So my question is, for those guy out there that have run ManZ more than I, what is your take on the Kombi weapons? Do you run your squads with Kombi, just give the Main ManZ one, or say screw it, I want mah manZ cheap, they are a missile to be fired down the field so they can play poop tickles with the enemy with their PKs.
Also, interested if anyone thinks the armorbane and extra attack of double saws is worth it. I'd think they can crack most vehicles they run into anyway, saws seem cool as hell (should be really easy to magnet me some hands up) but overkill for what I'd use them for, I'd kind hate to take away their range capability just because it keeps them a tad flexible and your enemy honest (As honest as 3 shoota shots can anyway)
Those are my thoughts, what say you guys?

No skorchas for basic missiles. Their job is to crash into the enemy as soon as possible, and hopefully dodge incoming fire by staying in close combat for the enemy's turn. A too effective skorcha can at worst put you out of charge range and then your paid 150+ points for a few flamer templates (as 3 MANZ will die in your opponent's next shooting phase).
I use two skorchas if I field 5 MANZ mainly because I have those glued on. It's nice for thinning out big fearless/stubborn hordes but in most games I don't even fire the things.
For Killsaws I think I'll do the same I do with my Terminators: one saw is plenty enough for one squad.

I had to buy them because I have no Elites now that Lootas are heavy support. Well except nobs but they are severely over costed IMO.
Granted Meganobs will be fighting for room with Tankbustas when I make them.

In my humble opinion you mainly buy a Kombi-scorcha for the wall of death Overwatch. Since SnP won't let you do that, get your MANz in CC ASAP. Do not pass go, do not shoot anything unless you are 1". Even then only shoot at something that won't run or remove models out of comfortable charge range.

I almost always have mans keep their twin linked shoota for the reasons others have mentioned.
skortas are generally a waste, cannot be used for over watch, or will kill too many and prevent your charged
keep em cheap, keep em fast in a transport and GTG.
I dont even bother with boss pole generally too.
150pts for 3 MANZ in a trukk is a steal of a deal... that the models ROCK and are a pleasure to paint up is just so much goodness

No bosspole? Shotgun-Jesus you are tripping out. IMO a bosspole is essential now we can take one (MANz are ideally almost always in combat from Turn 2 so they've got a decent chance on the Mob Rule table if your Boss is alive) and I quite like the addition of 1 kombi-skorcha and a Killsaw. A complete Swiss Army Knife of a unit and only 20 points more than a unit without any upgrades. Obviously you don't use the skorcha if it even MIGHT ruin your chances of a charge but if you don't use it, that's only 5 points gone and 6 point Boyz die all over the place and we take no notice. Automatically Appended Next Post: I love that no one has yet mentioned kombi-rokkits on MANz - sums it up!

kombi anything on manz is a waste of points. skorchas have good odds of burning you out of your charge range and cannot be used to overwatch due to SnP, and a single rokkit at BS2....not going to do anything.
BP is mandatory on them. 5pts for a reroll on a 1/3 chance to ignore the failed morale/pinning check is pretty big, especially when they really dont give a crap about the wounds from mob rule.
MANz kinda need to be limited to the 3man kill-teams. even just the 3 of them obliterate anything they charge that is sane to charge in the first place (if you charge 3 MANz into a Wraithknight you have issues....lol). Fielding more than 3 is just overkill. The 3 i field in my missiles almost never stay locked in combat as they annihilate their target with 8 S9 AP2 and 5 S9 AP2 Armorbane attacks.
Theyre not terminators, which is what everyone compares them to. If you use them like terminators they will fail or end up a point-sink for overkill damage.

the reason no boss pole, isnt that its not "useful"
its that on min squads of MANZ, 9/10 times when they lose enough guys to force the check, they are down to one nob or wiped out, so while you have a decent chance to recover from a failed moral check, generally what I find is that they dont end up using it as they are either totally fine when they hit combat, or wiped off the table already.
YMMV of course, and 100% of the time ill take a boss pole over a combi weapon, and if I have spare points, thats probably the first place I put it.
probably the fact that my opponent doesnt put the manz missles any where near the top of his "I MUST SHOOT THIS" list helps as they are focusing on the other things.
I didnt mean to imply it was a horrible choice to take the boss pole, just that its not auto take.

Fair enough. I was punching numbers when I had some free time at work and the I definitely see the no kombi weapons.
Truthfully the only reason I wanted them is they look awesome on the kits. Seriously, I love these kits. When I first saw them I thought they were too boxy, now that I have them and am assembling them (they hit the primer booth today), these things are just awesome. The details, all the bits I get to stick all over them to customize them. Love it.
After crunching the numbers and how awesome these kits are, it is possible another trukk in my army is about to lose 12 boys and gain 3 MegaNobz. We'll see how bad I botch this paint job first

The boss pole is also a last chance to pass the pinning test when the truck is eventually wrecked or explodes.
It is so enraging when they fail that damned test.

They really are great models. and the box set is amazing! It has tons of bits and orky plates extra goodies. Also all the killsaws..I got 3 meganobz (one with killsaws) and two painboys ( aobr nob base) out of the box! And extra powerklaws for some other boyz nobz. I may convert a few of my own meganobz, partly for fun, partly so a unit isnt so..uniform. Some nobz got shinnier teef then others and can afford a better set of mega armor

I always run with one Kombi Scorcha- sure, sometimes you wont use it, but the times you do, its freaking amazing.
Otherwise, like its been said. 3 Man units, trukk, reinforced ram. Add small extras as desired, but keep them cheap.

If I thought that I would be facing knight titans or any other super heavies, sure I might bump up a few more with kill saws,
Id still leave one or two without just to be ablative wounds,
YMMV there are some lsight tweaks to be made depending on your local meta,
around here, super heavies are fairly common, even in tournies, but I still dont have kill saws on my MANZ at the moment, MANz get hit hard by any super heavy thats good in close combat, and Id much rather have some little meks with kill saws or tankbustas to go after the good in CC super heavies.
but really... its a cheap upgrade and gives the +1 attack, so its never a terrible idea really, personal preference and local meta play largly into it i think.
personally, what I LOVE LOVE LOVE about the MANZ kit, is that all the arms come on pegs, so you can swap between guns and PKs/saws/mek arms without magnets if you dont glue that bit, so play around with it

Eh even if there are super heavies or knights, you dont need more than 1 anyway. The 3 manz on their own will wreck most vehicles, i bring the killsaw not only for the additional attack but the guarantee that i can FINISH the vehicle i attacked off rather than have it scoot away with 1hp (which always tended to happen to me).
5man units, i could see having 2 killsaws just because why not? even in a full unit of 10 i wouldnt ever have more than 2 killsaws - thats just obsurred overkill that either will be wasted, or will be losing the unit/most of the unit in the process of utilizing them (against S8+ walkers/monsters or super heavies that explode on them afterwords)

Sorry let me clarify.
10pts for +1 attack that's also Armourbane is pretty good, or Is it worth 10 points per model to give all Meganob an extra attack?

Meganobz are super stars. There are some other threads that cover this also, but for my part, they did WORK. It's like watching a Bradley tank smash into a kids cardboard playhouse: Leadership is its only achilles but look at what it takes to even get them to roll. And when they are supported they can be made fearless when it matters.
Overall, a delicious unit. They cant overwatch so I didnt upgrade mine but if you did, I suppose it would only be for the off chance you get split fire. Short of that...meh. Its overkill and they are usually being preceded by a wall of gretchen anyways.

Granted, I used to play against tyranids an awful lot, but I got a ton of mileage out of my kombi skorchas. They can mulch squads that could otherwise tarpit you. I would put one or two on a missile, and 3 out of 5 in the squad when it rolls with the boss.
It's not super likely that your trukk or wagon is going to stay alive long, but it can be useful being able to kill dudes from the safety of your ride, too. 3 S5 AP4 driveby templates are nothing to sneeze at.
