In the spirit of what I said in a different thread, about posting more, I'm posting this thread about my infinity table.

It is but a concept at the moment, and I'm new to playing the game, though I've been painting some models over the last year. The reason it's in the discussion forum, is that as the table comes together, I'm hoping more experienced peeps on here can give me tips on how I can ensure the table is well designed to help make for good games. I did have an earlier thread, getting some basic advice, but I'm now at the 'getting ready to drop some cash' stage.

I have a Games and Gears urban board due imminently from their kickstarter, and I'm going to take my time, and build up a tile at a time. I'll have eight tiles eventually, to make an 8x4 board if needed, or swap tiles in and out to change things up, though I'm planning on sticking to 4x4 usually.

So without further ado, I'd like some opinion on the first tile I'm planning, which is a bit of a slum. The tile I'm going to use, is a t junction from the tile options:

Along the long paved edge, I'm going to have three of these:

I'm hoping that gives it a 'crammed in council estate' type look, along with a dumpster and bits and pieces. I'm also considering catwalks or fire escape things to join them up. In one of the corners, I'm going to scratchbuild a one-storey seedy bar or strip club, but I'm unsure of what to put in the other corner. More housing? A shop? Any ideas out there in infinityland? I'm happy to scratchbuild things.

Also going to try and find a couple of clapped out sci-fi cars so that the road isn't one big fire lane.

Anyway, any ideas appreciated. Hopefully this thread may be of interest to some as the table begins to grow.

You can see a huge number of player made tables in this thread on the now not going to be closing Infinity Forums. A good source for ideas. http://infinitythegame.com/forum/index.php?/topic/16451-post-your-tables/

What size are your tiles? Crammed tables are good for chainrifles and other DTW weapons. Lousy for other stuff. You want a balance in terrain density, but not a 'balanced' or symmetrical table.

Set up a mock up of what you want by using boxes or whatever you have lying around, before you buy a lot of terrain. Then fill in the boxes etc with real terrain, scatter and all that. Sketches are not all that useful, IMHO, because they don't convey the 3d nature of the table as well as they should.

Strip club/bar on on corner, a bodega on the other. Or corner shop ( is that the UK-English term?)

That road should have a curve to it, or something to break it up so one cannot see across the entire board. Filling it with cars is generally not going to work so well. So much time spent placing the cars, then bumping them as you move minis etc...

Play a few games to get an idea of how terrain influences game play before you get to deep into table making. Even if you use books and boxes for buildings and bottle caps for barrels and... you get the idea.

Good luck.

Corner/convenience shop does for most of the UK/Australia, too.

Had to look up what a "bodega" was. Kept hearing it on NYC based cop shows.

Came up with a town name to start with.
Then I figured out it was a store that kept late hours, that sold stuff you usually need at short notice (except ours don't do booze as well )

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Sounds like a really fun tile to start with!

Council Estate/Slum gives you lots of opportunities to add fun details like boarded up windows and graffiti. My first stop would be Warmill, I love their ideas and they do shops and dumpsters and the like which would be perfect for you. Plus check out the way they paint them up for inspiration, they do theirs in nice pastel colours with lots of rusty damage which is quite stunning and very futuristic, council estatey.

If you want some cars there could be issues as described above but if you gluing your buildings in place you could consider some permanent cars in the same way. A couple of burnt out ones would be cool. You could also do a rusted one, up on bricks with the wheels stolen(or figure out an equivalent idea for a futuristic car without wheels).

Adding character will be the big seller I think. Council estates are full of identical looking buildings which will be easy to buy in but the character that the people add to it are what make them. Maybe have a look around a rougher area local to you(if you dare, I see you are in Scotland too! ) Glasgow, East Kilbride, Hamilton are full of dodgy areas for example as most big towns or cities are. Heck, I live in little old Strathaven and I don't have to walk far to see some rougher accommodation. I grew up in Govan and Coatbridge which would be ripe for ideas and inspiration. Wherever you are there should be somewhere not too far from home you can check out. Research is my first move on every project!

I'm in Aberdeen, and work in the fire service. Dodgy areas are my bread and butter! Thanks for the input. Some great ideas. I'll check out warmill.

Haha, nice one, inspiration for burnt out cars too then! My best bud is working in Aberdeen these days and I'm taking a visit very soon, what's good to do?

Depends what you're into really. Good nightlife - we have more pubs and clubs per capita than anywhere else in the uk. They are expensive though, because of the oil industry. Likewise, tons of good restaurants, but pricy. The beach is good for bowling etc, or there is a gazillion golf courses if you're into that. Even if you aren't the driving range can be a laugh. If you're more a cultural sort, then the Gordon Highlander's Museum is worth a visit, as is the Maritime museum and Art gallery. Duthie Park can be nice if the weather is decent.

If you like football, then its worth catching a game at pitoddrie. The standard of football is mediocre, but tickets are pretty cheap.

Sadly there is no FLGS other than the ubiquitous GW.

Let me know what you are into and I can give you a better idea.
