Hey
Tonight I had a guy telling me that since his chaos lord was an independent character he didn't have to take a morale test for the unit he was attached to being destroyed, I was unsure about it but decided to go with it, however now I've come home it doesn't seem right and unfortunately I've left my rule book at the store :-( so if anyone can shed some light on this it would be great and I will get a good nights sleep after all.

Chaos Lords are Fearless aren't they?
If he isn't, he'd have to test like anyone that was a member of a unit that got knocked down to one member.

They are but that wasn't the reason he wasn't going to take the test, it was down to the Chaos Lord being an Independent Character, somebody else said this about a Farseer the week before but it wasn't my game and I only heard half the conversation so didn't really get involved.

Hmm, my group has played it that way as well, but now looking through the book, I cannot for the life of me find where it is stated. Was it maybe that the unit, say a HQ + troops, has all the troops killed, so now the HQ is just a unit by himself? and his unit has not suffered any casualties?

No, because he does not become "just a unit by himself" until the start of the following phase.

For that combat, he is part of the unit. Unit gets swept, Chaos Lord gets swept. If his unit loses a combat, he loses the combat and has to take LD test.

As Rigeld has said, if the lord does not have fearless (doubtful), he would have had to test, yes. Being an IC changes nothing there.

I believe some past editions of 40k specifically stated that if the only model left in the unit was an IC that it did not have to take a morale check as it counted as a separate unit by the time morale came around.
I don't think that wording exists anymore in 7th.

No - he did not have to take a morale test because he was Fearless.
Why are you complaining that he is not reading the thread when he gives you the clear answer (or even was answering Rigeld or myself if that is not the answer you wanted)?

It was due to the Chaos Lord being an independent Character that my opponent thought he didn't have to take a morale check for the squad being wiped not due to the fact he had fearless, he only mentioned that The Lord had fearless after trying to find the rule regarding ICs and morale tests.

The train of thought and reasoning as to why he didn't test was wrong, yes.
But the fact that he didn't test was correct.
Many times have i argued whether the cover save is a 3+ or 4+ and rolled a "2". As long as you can mention it at your next game:
"He's not testing because he's Fearless, being an IC has nothing to do with it"
Then i'm sure the matter is settled until that time.
