So since the photos are out already, I can post this Barbarian Hero I painted for Shieldwolf Miniatures!
The kit comes with two head variants: one with a horned helmet and one with the bald head and beard. I chose the bald head since it fits with one of the
NPCs in our
DnD campaign, so that’s a no-brainer for me. The kit is very clean and I was surprised that it almost required no clean-up: I barely had to remove mold lines for this. It also comes with a wonderful base: I hesitated a lot putting snow on it since I don’t want to cover it up!
So for this piece I wanted to use a muted primary color triad combination. Thus I made the leathers on the reddish side of brown, The woad tattoos and his eyes blue, and the beard blonde like a proper Viking.
One thing people should know is that I research a lot before painting something. For this piece I had to look at how animal fur looks like, how blood on snow would look like, and Pictish/Gaelic/Celtic woad paint designs. Needless to say, my Google history is very interesting (to say the least) because of painting miniatures. Also, believe it or not I’ve never done blood effects before, so it was new territory for me. I like how it turned out, especially the blood on the snow. Living in a tropical country, I had no idea how snow should look like, much more how blood on the snow should look like.
Unfortunately he doesn’t seem to fit visually for my Lannister army. I guess it’s time to start a barbarian army, then?
Cheers!
