What's everyone's opinions on gretchin. Models are kinda cool and seem to be decently price. But how do they do on the tabletop. I haven't bought any yet, considering ive got 4000 points or so I thought it might be time to invest in some if they really have a use on the battlefield...

Weaker than guardsmen, range of a pistol. But BS3, which we don't have much of, and really cheap. Really you're using them for:
A) troop filler
B) walking cover
C) somethin or your shokk gun to sit with
D) grot army!!!
Now they can have their moments, but obviously the tougher troop is the ork boy.

12' S3 Assault 1 shots - the snipers of the Ork world
Run a load of these guys - sure they're weak little things, but when you consider they are 35 points for a squad and a single terminator is 40 points per model - the amount of stabby stabby and shooty shooty these things churn out, you'll drown then in numbers easily.
Imagine the look on their face when a +200 point Terminator squad is swamped by 105 points of grots (who will likely cause havoc!)

One of my most memorable moments was when a unit of grots charged 3 terminators and tied then up for a whole game, killing one in the process bringing the unit under half strength (which used to matter).

A guy stomped a group of imperial knights or something on here with a grit army. All about objective secured by means of being able to have a crap load of expendable bodies xD

I won a game today because I kept two units of grots camped on two objectives while the rest of my army tied up my opponent in CC. He damn near tabled me but with a combination of Maelstrom of War VPs earned during the course of the game and keeping those two backfield units on both corners of the table I took the game 9-7
The game before that, I had a Green Tide blob with three units of grots marching up in front of it as a shield. My opponent spent so much time clearing them away that the green tide whomped him with almost no lost models by the time they got into combat.
Grots are a great troop choice and most ork players would do well having 30-40 of them (especially because of the fact that it's really affordable to do so).

If you're aiming for 4000pts, grots are not going to get you there any time soon!

Grots are really good for screening valuable units or for using as extra wounds for a character

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).
Keep on rolling |

Grots are the underdog unit. Theyre horridly bad in all regards except their cost and BS3.
I havent fielded any in new-dex because my Lobbas are my backfield objective holders now, but previous dex i had a unit of 10 camping around a Loota squad for stalling an assault from bikers or other such fast units.
I had one game where i did just that, and that 40pt unit took out 3 DA bikers lol. I was stunned, especially since i didnt intend them to do anything other than give the lootas another turn to shoot something.
Ive never spammed them, even though i have the models to lol. I just find them too weak to field as a core unit, as even our boyz die pretty damn easy but atleast theyre T4 so a fair bit of weapons wound on 4s or 5s rather than the ENTIRE GAME outside lasguns wound on 2s lol.

I should add that in my last game where the grots scored the two points that won, I had them in ruins that blocked LoS and used the Finkin Cap to roll the warlord trait that gave all my units 3+ cover in ruins. So while they're good filler you still need to know how and where to use them properly, and being lucky helps. They aren't a magical problemsolving unit. I've had them shot off objectives many times as well.

The point of Grots is that they are warm bodies. If what you need done requires a warm body and nothing else, grots will do it cheaper than any other option. If you expect them to ever need to actually accomplish something, you're better off bringing a different unit. I like to hold them in reserve, then scoot them onto rear objectives and go to ground every time something looks at them funny. Either they divert firepower that would otherwise be whittling down the main body of the army that is rampaging in my opponent's face, or they secure objectives for half the cost of a minimum boyz unit.
Now, I haven't had a chance to use them in 7th yet. It may be that the new "everything scores" status quo means they're no longer needed because backfield units like Mek Gunz and Lootaz can score. But I have a hunch that a minimum-size grot mob or two might still be useful, because the aforementioned units tend to draw attention and firepower.

Not only that but, as has been mentioned, their size means it's easier to hide them behind LoS blocking ruins

I love the grots! I keep wanting to make an all grot army using the mini tanks and grot super tank for elites and fast. then using gunz for heavy. But would still have to use orks for HQ.

IMO the only reason to take grots is to enable additional detachments when points are limited. Outside of that they are useless. Objective secured is all but irrelevant to a unit that dies when something is able to get within 3" and anything the codex (especially big gunz) give you way more value for your points.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |
