So has anyone else been following The Strain on FX? Although the pilot was a bit clunky with providing exposition on Eph's marital and personal issues, the story has caught up a good bit IMO with the focus on Setrakian and the German. The only thing I find myself peeved about is how iffy the female characters are so far in the story. For example in the latest episode:
Spoiler:
Ansell's wife just outright feeds the bloody neighbor to her vampire husband! Wtf? I mean I get he was being annoying and all but it's pretty damn extreme to just flat out kill the guy because he hit your dog and is being a nuisance. This is only compounded with her hypocrisy after all the Christian stuff she does beforehand. She sure believes in God alright, just likes to forget the you shall not murder part "It wasn't me! Just my hungry hungry husband!". Then we have Nora who for some reason wusses out on containing the infected people as if she didn't see and actually examine them herself, I mean for a person who deals with biology and dissected one of the infected to begin you'd think she'd get with the program and see that they're a pretty damn big threat. Then she gets mad at Setrakian for saving their lives...wut? Are you going to kiss away the infection, wish it away? I'm hoping she gets nommed at this point so she can see how wrong she is.

Other than that tidbit and some of the awkward family stuff going on for Eph, I think it's been pretty good so far, particularly scenes like
Spoiler:
the prison confrontation between the German and Setrakian
. A good change of pace from something like the walking dead where there's more malevolence and treachery behind the monsters than focussing on seeing how the real monsters are in humans rather than the zombies. Also I can't help but keep thinking Frodo will pop out at some point and scream "Sam!" at some point because Sean Astin is playing one of the main characters, especially since this series has its own effective vampire version of the Dark Lord as well.

I wouldn't get too uptight about her being a Christian. It's pretty much given that if someone is a Christian in shows , most times they are either depicted as flying rodent gak crazy or evil or misguided. Pretty predictable stuff on t.v and movies these days.

Spoiler:
Pretty much. It just kinda seemed pointless to have that scene with the prayer beads if she was going to feed a neighbor to her husband. Plus I'm Christian myself so I was a bit annoyed to see yet another great example of Hollywood liberalism being sprinkled in for no real reason. I would prefer her haven been eaten by her husband than the dog!

I'm enjoying it so far. I thought the neighbor in the shed was kinda funny, but she did it for revenge because he said he hit her dog. Which also seemed kinda extreme, even for a dog lover like me, but I think it was more about the creators saying "Hey, its a not-vampire show, so we need to kill someone every X # of minutes."

I felt like the whole custody hearing and personal life of the lead guy was just a dumb waste of time. I could care less. It's a not-vampire show and they need to kill someone every X # of minutes, so worthless character building just interferes with the killing.

I like the WWII angle though. And the worms makes it real creepy. But it just doesn't feel vampirey to me, the worms and snake tongues makes it feels more like an alien invasion kind of thing.

@Necros.

I think it's mainly because Del Toro was trying to escape the mainstream vampire stuff that he went so far in making them really, REALLY, inhuman with the metamorphosis they go through, especially since in a lot of the other popular vampire fiction there's little downside to being turned other than not being able to walk during day (except the atrocity that is Twilight) and having to feed on blood while getting a whole bunch of buffs that more or less outweigh the downsides. Here you don't even get to keep your genitals or hair so yeah, he's going the other way.

I agree a lot with the personal life thing being a waste of time, he's pretty much married to his work so his family is really just there for him to have someone close to save (besides Nora eventually probably) when the vamps gets really loose.

All will be explained as they go along. Get the books if you want to see where it goes.

They're only what, 4 shows in? There is plenty of time to expand upon each character.

Mindless killing and "vampires, duh" do not a good show make.

Spoiler:
The custody stuff and Eph's failing marriage become central to the storyline.
