Definitely lots of room for improvement, but I was pretty proud of how this turned out considered it was my first attempt and I only have the basic Citadel starter kit! Any criticism or tips would be very welcome!

I think you've done great mate.

A highlight on the face would have you with a stunning, gaming standard Spearman.

Thanks! I've already started my second spearman and have some ideas how things can be done better. Trying to get my skills up to snuff before tackling the big griffin in my starter set!

Nice Start, better than my first model was! You should try using a 0.05 or 0.1 fine liner for the pupils.

Very first mini? Pretty fantastic, I reckon. Considering your skills will only increase with each mini, you're laughing mate. And with only the Citadel starter set? Even more impressive!

Bloody good job. Keep it up.

Good job.

I suggest you thin the white a bit more when you do the shield, and do a few coats to get a nice finish. It looks thickly applied on this model, whereas everything thing else seems fairly smooth and consistent.

Otherwise a really solid tabletop standard, keep it up. You'll be amazed how quickly you improve once you start churning the models out.

haha yeah go Giants!

Thanks for all the support! As soon as I posted this I looked at the other posts in this forum and realized they all look like friggin LOTR movie miniatures.. is there somewhere else for noob painters?

The white on the shield was tricky. I did several layers, but then I washed the whole figure and the wash wrecked my nice white shield, it looked splochy and dirty so I redid it but couldn't get it right. For highlights I've been trying to just mix some white in with my other colors, as I only have 1 yellow, 1 blue, etc.. it didn't really work out so well either. Should the highlighting layer be very watered down and thin? I felt like it looked way to obvious, but will keep trying!

Looks great for your first attempt. A wash of Nuln Oil on the metal and shield might help some. Paint is a little thick but, otherwise good work for your first.

I like your paintjob. a simple thing to improve the overall look would be to use less flock on your base. Just some patches of green look more realistic and less like a green carpet.

Great first mini! You've hit and bested the first major hurdle I usually drive new painters away: clean blocking of basic colors. That's like 85% of the battle, and once you get faster and more efficient at it, you'll be ready to incorporate the next stages like washes, glazes, dry brushing etc. Kudos!

The face just needs a bit more. The rest of the model looks really good. Very good job, esp for a first attempt
