What's the purpose of the Farseer? Why not drop it down to an Autarch and shove it in a Serpent too? Keeps it from being killed and them getting the 'Slay the Warlord' because it's the only target out there. Plus, adjusts the roll to get the bird in skies. With the spare points, you can Exarch the bird, add Marksman's Eye to snipe out enemy plasma and other anti-tank weapons in infantry squads and add Ghostwalk Matrix to each Serpent so they can go wherever they want, whenever they want without risk of Dangerous Terrain. Turns your one-trick pony into two tricks.

I have an overall goal of an 1850 list. I'm trying to use only models from that list to save money.

Being the only thing that isn't AV12 or flying. Every Bolter, Lasgun, Flamer, Heavy Bolter, Tau rifle etc is going to be aimed for it just because they have no hope of shooting anything else. Sure it can be kept in the back, but then it's just as worthless. 20% of an army can damage AV12, so that's 70% gunning specifically for the one target they can actually damage. Or, get an Autarch and have the Crimson Hunter come out when it needs to consistently and have points for spare upgrades for the entire group.

As for saving money, kinda have to get over that. 40k is an expensive hobby. Buy what is needed. Lord knows I'm not going to be using Vypers in my 1850 or 2000 point list (Hornets are far better), but for my 1000 I'll be fielding two of em so they're being bought and are on their way now. An Autarch is what, $10 from ebay? Saving money or making sound tactical choices... Take your pick.

I think you missed it has mantle of the laughing god. You must be new to eldar, so let me give you the overview.

Mantle+jink= a 2+ cover save that he can re roll. A re-rollable 2+ cover save. Sure every bolter, lasgun, heavy bolter (skipping flamer cause thats just dumb), tau rilfe and etc can shoot at it. I would be glad they did. Because if they do that means there wasting there shots. You want to guess how many shots it takes to down a mantle seer?
116 wounds. WOUNDS. Not shots, not hits, wounds. Thats 301 bolter shots. Its about as close to an unkillable warlord as I could ask for. And you know how much that wargear costs? 40 points.

Oh and did I hear you say that keeping it back is worthless? Sure, casting invisibily/fortune/shrouding on a wave serpent making it near unkillable also is sure a waste. Almost as much as doing nothing in a wave serpent all game like your suggesting.

OP your doing it right, ignore SharkoutofWata. No need to waste money on autarch, (I havnet used one in over a year), just buy what you will use.

I am new to Eldar actually but have seen the Mantle god thing enough to understand how good it is. And yes, that math is very impressive. 301 bolter shots. Or just a couple very unlucky rolls for cover saves, no matter how much the math says it can't happen, it can because it's a game of chance. OR, shove it in the back of a Serpent so 301 Bolter shots have absolutely zero chance of hurting it, taking useful upgrades in the rest of the list so you keep the survivability, better chances of the flyer coming the first turn it is available, and the ability to ignore dangerous terrain so the Serpents have perfect mobility. I put more faith in removing the dice rolls entirely than hoping they go my way consistently, no matter the odds.

And we're not including the somewhat common 'ignores cover' weapons. Sternguard, Tau smart missiles, Tyranid Hive Guard, a few others that are pretty common in my local meta. Hiding behind a cover save isn't that reliable in my experience. Hiding inside metal walls is until that Marksman Crimson Hunter can pick off the 'Ignores Cover' weapons is reliable.

But, common thing is the cover save so have at it. I merely suggest what works better in my own meta as I've seen it.

The odds can mess you up. Ive had one random multi melta shot insta gib my farseer when I rolled double ones.

But really you dont need to be anywhere near the bolters and infantry guns. And if the farseer that the autarch is in gets blown, its a very easy slay the warlord.
The farseer can stay nice and away from the enemy, while buffing the eldar army with powers. I wont deny the upgrades are usefull, but in my opinion the mantle is well worth sacrificing a little bit of upgrades.
