I'm having a few issues with magma cutters and want some more opinions on how they should be played..

Firstly, number of bonus attacks. So a maulerfiend is equipped with "Two magma cutters". Nothing else in the CSM codex has access to magma cutters. Hence the vehicle equiptment entry for magma cutters applies only to the maulerfiend. As the maulerfiend has "Two magma cutters" these listed affects apply twice (two bonus attacks for 1+ hit, four bonus attacks for all hits). Would you agree with this being correct?

Then who can the bonus attacks hit. For a single model unit (eg a vehicle or MC) it is simple, they hit that model. The additional attacks are made against one of the models hit. How is this defined? A model that takes a wound or passes a save? That is a model hit not wounded.
For example: maulerfiend in combat with 2 space marines. Hits twice, wounds once, one dies. Is the second marine 'hit' and thus the additional attack can be made against it? Or fighting 5 marines, hits with all 4 attacks and kills three. Can two bonus attacks be made, but they would only affect the fourth marine that got 'hit'?
I feel there is no obvious answer except that a model 'hit' is one that has a wound allocated to it, but that is not what the rules for magma cutter say. Opinions?

First, no. The Magma Cutter special rules don't care how many you could have, it's either one or two. Not one or two per cutter.

You're over complicating it. A hit is just that, a hit. There are typically three different triggers for abilities during an attack ( and sometimes their opposites).

"A hit..." - This is when you roll a To Hit roll and it is successful.
"A wound..." - This is when you roll a To Wound roll and it is successful.
"An unsaved wound..." - This is when your opponent fails a save.

Magma cutters are triggered on successful To Hit rolls. They may only strike a model that was hit. So if you hit twice vs. marines, wound once, then you get a single bonus attack against the one marine. If you hit 4 times and wound once then you get two bonus attacks usable on the 3 marines that were hit and not killed.

"Huddle close to your Emperor if he makes you feel safe. He cannot save you, for only Chaos is eternal."

Cross: Noun. A thing you nail people to.

Ok, I will concede it 1/2 additional attacks not 2/4.

So additional attacks can be against models so that the number of original hits equals models wounded + models hit with magma. ie (against multiple model unit) 2 hits with power fists, 1 model killed, 1 bonus attack made, or 4 (all) hits with power fists, 3 models killed, 2 bonus attacks made killing maximum of 1 model. Would that be how it would work?
