Subject: Independent characters losing its own faction type?
|
 |
Legendary Master of the Chapter

Quick question
Im fairly sure i will ether boil down to a HIWPI or some one will bring something up that i missed but.
Does a Independent character lose its faction type if joining one of a different faction.
IE IG priest jumping into a unit of space marines is now a space marine unit only? or a space marine and a IG unit... for the purposes of say something like preferred enemy or IG Orders.

If an IC joins a unit, he is part of that unit for all rules purposes.
This means that a Lord Commissar in a squad of SM Scouts can not be affected by Preferred Enemy (AM) but can be affected by Hatred (SM).
Likewise, a Chapter Master in an Infantry squad will benefit from AM orders (unless they say something to the affect "all models from C: AM...").

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Though i dont think it matters as much anymore,
the previous addition was worded exactly the same in regards to IC, but when i brought up the multiple different levels of allies ( i think it was GK + C:INQ + SM) most people stated that they retain there original codex (faction)
Just because he is a part of a unit doesn't remove his faction? or is this one of those things that have no clear cut answers as i cannot see anything that removes that.

It really depends on the situation.
If the effect concerns the unit as a whole, such as rolling To Hit/To Wound, then the IC is a part of that unit. So, Preferred Enemy affects To Hit and To Wound rolls, therefore, thee IC will either be affected or not, based on whether or not the unit as a whole is affected.
If the effect concerns individual models (for example, Supporting Fire), then the model would be considered to be part of his original faction. Of course pretty much all model specific effects say "Models from this codex...".

Basically what im checking is, Pask has PE: Space marine, and a chaplain is attached to a C:BA terminator squad for whatever reason. does pask get PE?, another example a unit of space marine centurions has yarrick attached, can he order himself to ignore cover? (as he needs to order a IG unit and the effect gives the whole unit ignore cover).

In both cases the answer is no.
Preferred Enemy applies affects To Hit and To Wound rolls.
When attacking, you are attacking a Blood Angels unit. You are rolling To Hit and To Wound against a Blood Angels unit. Since you are not attacking a Space Marine unit (remember while attached, an IC is a member of the unit for all rules), you do not get the benefit of Preferred Enemy.
In th second scenario, you just have a Centurion unit. Yarrick while attached is part of the Centurion unit, which is not an IG unit, so he cannot order himself.
If a Chapter Master was attached to a squad of IG Veterans, however, he would benefit from the order.

I think the IC stipulation that he is part of the unit "for all rules purposes" trumps - a unit of faction X after being joined by an IC is still faction X.
So Pask's unit doesn't get PE against the BA terminator unit, and Yarrick can't order his own unit to Ignore Cover.
