If I take one for a character do they HAVE to be mounted on it, or can I take one, have the character start off in a separate unit and just have the barge as more of a non-force org weapon platform?

They must be on it, as per 7th edition chariot rules

You don't take a character for them, you take one for a character.

That's an important difference because the former would imply that you'd be able to field one without a rider - which is impossible.

The CCB no longer is Dedicated Transport (with the debatable exception of Kulakh, thanks to Forgeworld's inexcusable lazyness), it's a Chariot in 7th.

Hmm, would that actually work with Kutlakh?

CCB: See Necron-codex.

But in the Necron-codex, thanks to the FAQ, the CCB:
1) Is no longer a Transport.
2) Now has "Rider: Necron Overlord"

To me it reads as if Kutlakh can take an option that no longer exists; so no CCB for him.
How do you feel about that?

IA12 hasn't been updated to 7th edition.

RAI I would let Kutlakh take the CCB as necron model would normally be able to, and they start out in it and remain in it as the rider. The reason being is its HIWPI because it makes fair sense, and the rules in IA12 reference the codex entry which is modified by the FAQ.

Since FW is lazy as heck, there still is no FAQ. Right now, they seem to have stopped doing any FAQ and prefer slowly updating all old books. Good idea, gets them more money. Screw players.

Given all the other named ICs in the necron codex which could otherwise have taken a CCB have lost the ability, it's a good bet that Kutlakh will eventually lose his ride as well.

That said, who really knows? perhaps the forgeworld gurus may just say it works anyway?
