I think so. I think they are devastatingly effective against space marines. Especially twenty devilgants shooting at a tactical squad. Haunts fire, space marines go bye-bye. Nidzilla is also very effective in apocalypse. Those imperial knight titans aren't so tough when they've got 50 T-fexes shooting at them. Though generally I play Tau, the bids are either my second or third choice (I play Necrons too.).

The reason I ask is that one of my friends just quit 40k, and he has a decent sized Tyranid army (I can get all his models for free). He doesn't have many MCs, but he has lots of gaunts. Could I win games running a 90 gaunt list?

90 termagants will be under 361 pts. Your only problem will be filling out your list without access to MCs.

Getting MCs will fill out points (and will do so more cheaply in dollars than 40mm creatures)

It really depends on how long you have to play. Swarms of gants take a lot of time to move.

Black Bases and Grey Plastic Forever:My quaint little hobby blog.

40k- The Kumunga Swarm (more)
Count Mortimer’s Private Security Force/Excavation Team (building)
Kabal of the Grieving Widow (less)

Plus other games- miniature and cardboard both.

I build lists that use a lot of Gaunts, but I use Big Bugs for specific functions. I say grab 'em. Then add Big Bugs as you go. The ideal way is proxy, then purchase if it fits your style.

It's centainly a good way to start a Nid army, although you'll need to build on it to get effective. Dev gaunts can hurt infantry, be good distractions and good for objectives, but you'll need some heavy hitters to do damage to bigger targets. Get them. Add a couple of flying tyrants for synapse, add a venom thrope to give cover to the gaunts, Add a hive crone and a carnifex, or exocrine. And ull have a pretty decent starting point whilst you work out what else you need to find ur style and be competitive

I could run a Flyrant, 90 Termagants, and 3 Tervigons to start off and then build from there.

Sounds fine...Personally I don't much like Tervigons these days, I find her overpriced. So as you add new Big Bugs, you can remove Tervigons. I usually use one, though nowadays, I often don't even add the one. In the meantime, you can add some upgrades with all the spare points you'll have.

If you were to do that make sure you have another FMC to accompany your Flyrant, you want to present more targets/problems for your opponent

I'm assuming he already have 3 tervigons? If not, i don't advice getting 3. One is great (especially in troops) but more is kinda wasted.
I'd probably convert the two extra tervigons into tyranofexes. They should be more usefull and could help your list. A super swarmy list will have trouble with vehicules mostly. Get the electro grubs for the flyrant and both tyranofexes, that should lessen the problem unless the other is spamming AV.

If that's what he have atm, next buys should probably be malanthropes or venom/zoey and a 2nd flyrant. Maybe one squad of warriors too, since for now, you only have one synapse for your termies (tervigon don't count, he'll kill them).

-Hive Fleet Wyvern, yay for nids! (around 1000 points)
