So, thinking about tournament play here in the UK. Most tournaments are still running Eternal War missions as their tournament format. Yet every army list I see is obsessed with Objective Secure and spamming units/transports with this rule in order to outscore. Which makes sense at first glance, because if you score objectives you win games. Obviously in the new, hyper fun, Maelstrom missions, you need to score objectives every turn. But in most tournament games, you are only scoring objectives on turn 5 or 6. So if you can kill all you enemies Drop Pods with 5 man Marine units, Wave Serpents with minimal Dire Avengers or whatever, over the course of five game turns, you don't need a load of Objective Secure units left. You just need stuff on all the objectives. So bringing a ton of Str7/Haywire stuff (like everyone did in 6th) should still be able to beat these armies, no? Am I mad on this? It just seemed to me that everyone jumped lists really quickly without necessarily playing all that many games.

You're certainly not mad. This has been a constant debate since 7th ed. dropped. Should you go for tableing firepower or objective secured? If you play an army with durable troops, I think objective secured is the way to go. If you play an army with weaker troops, it's not really worth it. That's why you see many Tyranid players taking minimum ripper swarms and stocking up on MCs.

I've just submitted an army list for a tournament and I only have two five man Necron Warrior units that are objective secure in the army. Everything else is designed to shoot, chop, flame and vapourise my opponent. I think games will only go one of two ways, but I'm hoping everyone is following the lots-of-squishy-obj-secure stuff template of army building!

I would advise more objective secured for Necrons because their troops are so strong. 10 man squads in Ghost Arks seem to be very effective, but to each his own.
