So, I'm putting together som thunderwolf cavalry, and I'm having difficulty interpreting a particular rule. So TC have, as their standard war gear, a bolt pistol and chainsword. In their codex entry it states that TC can replace their bolt pistol with a boltgun or plasma pistol, and in the next entry, that they may take weapons from the melee weapons list. So, what I'm wondering is, since the part about taking melee weapons doesn't say anything about replacing anything, can a storm shield and a melee weapons (say, a frost axe) be taken, and the character still replace their bolt pistol with a plasma pistol (I've noticed the sprues have a lot of holstered pistols)? I know I wouldn't be able to get the extra attack for the pistol due to the storm shield, but could the model in essence, shoot with a plasma pistol during the shooting phase, and then holster it and go into close combat with the frost axe and storm shield? And if so, does it matter how it's modelled, ie would it be equally valid to model the marine holding the axe and storm shield, with a holstered pistol OR holdinhg an axe and pistol with the shield on his saddle?

On a similar note, if the model takes the boltgun, since the entry says the boltgun only replaces the bolt pistol, is the model still assumed to have a chainsword, since it's part of his standard wargear?

Cheers in advance

I don't have the codex so no page numbers.

The Melee Weapons List will specify what (if anything) needs to be swapped out for an item on it.

As to the chainsword/bolter, yes. If you swap out hte bolt pistol, you'll still have the chainsword.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Page 47 , melee weapons, first line under "melee weapons" gives this answer to your first question clearly.
