So I have been putting an Ork army together and I have reached 750 points. The basis is the Assault on Black Reach set with a bit of basic conversion work, plus a trukk and some shoota boyz. Come payday, I will expand with a cocuple of battlewagons to bring it up to 1k. They are supposed to be Evil Sunz.

I played a few games with my brother, but we got so many rules wrong that I don't really count them. This was my first outing for a proper game at my local GW!

My opponent also played Orks, which was pretty cool as I knew it would be a recipe for carnage on both sides. Apologies for not being able to remember the exact numbers that got killed at given points.

My list:

Warboss with 'eavy armour, lukky stikk, twin-linked shoota, bosspole, cybork body
19 slugga boyz (Warboss' unit)
22 shoota boyz including 2 big shootas and a nob with power klaw and bosspole
6 nobz with 'eavy armour, shootas, waaagh! banner, big choppas x 5 and power klaw and bosspole on the boss nob
Trukk for transporting the nobz with red paint job, big shoota and reinforced ram
2 deffkoptas with rokkit launchas

My opponent's list was something like this:

Warboss in mega armour
Painboy
6 (I think) x nobz - 4 had choppas and sluggas, 1 had a big choppa, 1 had a power klaw (Warboss' unit)
24 shoota boyz with 'eavy armour (painboy's unit)
Runtherd with grot prod and some gretchin
Runtherd with grabba stikk and some gretchin

Pre-game:

We rolled for the relic mission and hammer and anvil deployment. The relic was in the centre of a forest.

I deployed with my koptas and trukk on the left flank, sluggas in the centre and shoota boyz on the right.

My opponent set up his shootas in the centre and nobz on the left flank. His gretchin just skulked around at the back of the board for reasons known only to Mork.

My opponent then stole the initiative. Damn it!

TURN 1 - UVVER BOYZ

Shoota boyz ran towards the objective. Nobz moved forward through a wall towards my shootas (apparently there was a door on the wall).

TURN 1 - EVIL SUNZ

Shootas and sluggas moved forward, ready to gang up on his nobz in the next turn. Shootas went through cover.

Trukk went flat out towards the gretchin on the left. Koptas turbo boosted towards the objective, but couldn't pick it up because, apparently, that could only be done in the movement phase. Oh well.

TURN 2 - UVVER BOYZ

My opponent called the waaagh.

His shootas blasted the koptas off the face of the earth. Not such a biggie for me - at least he wasn't shooting a more valuable unit. They took the relic.

He tried to run and charge with his nobz, but his friend informed him he couldn't do that due to the mega armour. Muahaha.

TURN 2 - EVIL SUNZ

Nobz disembarked from the trukk.

Shootas and sluggas moved forward.

Trukk tank shocked his shoota boyz. He attempted a death or glory with his nob, who got run over.

Shootas and sluggas opened fire at the nobz, killing the warboss, killing 2 nobz and wounding 1.

In assault, the nobz wiped out the gretchin squad on the left despite the runtherd's valiant efforts with his grabba stikk and one wound on the boss nob from the grots' snap fire. They consolidated 6" towards the other grots on the other side of the board.

Unfortunately I couldn't get quite enough slugga boyz into fighting range against the nobz. I took a few hits, then I took out one more and put a wound on one of them. I technically lost, but the boyz stayed put due to mob rule.

TURN 3 - UVVER BOYZ

His shoota boyz charged my sluggas. Warboss challenged the painboy, who declined.

His boyz' 72 attacks wiped the sluggas out. However, they did score a fair few wounds in response. Shoota boyz cut the nobz down to one guy who was no longer in base contact with anyone, meaning my shoota boyz were now disengaged.

Warboss took a wound but did some serious damage back.

Again, I lost but stayed put.

TURN 3 - EVIL SUNZ

Nobz wiped out the other grot squad and consolidated back towards the central brawl.

Shoota boyz ran around to counter-charge his shoota boyz. However, I forgot to declare the charge before I invited him to roll for his attacks first, so they just sat there doing nothing. I prayed my boss would survive the ensuing onslaught.

His shootas took the warboss down to one wound, after 'eavy armour and lukky stikk close shaves. He responded by saying "I'LL TAKE ON THE LOTTA YAZ!!!" and krumped four.

I won, his boyz stayed put due to mob rule and a couple of wounds.

TURN 4 - UVVER BOYZ

The nob that had been disengaged charged in.

Warboss challenged the painboy, who declined.

Shootas failed to damage the Warboss. Warboss took a swing at the nob but missed. Remaining attacks killed three boyz. They stayed put.

TURN 4 - EVIL SUNZ

I called the waaagh in the hope that my nobz would be able to help out.

My shootas turned up late to the counter-charge party. Nobz legged it down the board and just made it into assault range.

Warboss challenged the painboy, who declined.

My nobz took out a few of his shootas. His shootas didn't wound the nob, took out a couple of my boyz. Warboss finished off the nob and killed two further boyz.

Turns 5 and 6 basically consisted of me wiping out the painboy and remnants of his shoota boyz, then taking the objective.

REFLECTIONS:

During practice games with my brother I developed the anti-death star tactic of using the boyz mobs closely together, and I was pleased that it worked during this game against his nobz. Even if you technically lose the first round of assault you can eventually grind them down. To be fair, I think the main problem was his mistake with the waaagh and initial charge attempt with his nobz, which exposed him to a counterattack.

Although the deff koptas failed to take the relic, they did at least distract his shoota fire away from my boyz and my nobz in the trukk.

Nobz did a good job of rampaging through the rear lines wiping out weaker units.

I thought my opponent's army list and choice of tactics were a bit bizarre, given that he was quite an experienced player - his grots did absolutely nothing all game apart from get squished by the nobz for easy victory points. He could have at least used them as a meat shield. He was also well aware of the rule that the model closest to where the fire is coming from takes the wounds, yet still put his warboss at the front of the nobz anyway. Then again, perhaps he was going easy on me.

It was a good fun game with carnage on both sides. Bring on the next one!
