When Malifaux first released I never did get to play. I bought the Victorias box set, painted it, but never did get through the rulebook or play. I set it aside and never gave it a thought.

Well I'd like to give the guy another try. I hear this edition is a little better than the previous one.

I'm thinking with this go around with the fella I'll start out playing small games with a faction that's good for a beginner and then once I get a feel for the game, I'll jump to a faction with models and a theme that I really dig.

So what might be a good starter faction? I was speaking to one of the designers and he suggested The Guild... is that the consensus here? What do you folks think?

To be honest, I found the viktorias to be pretty good as a starter set (I had the 2E set though, so viks, student of conflict, Taelor and a few Ronin). Interesting mechanics, dipping your toe in synergy but the whole army not relying on it, and the chance to flip a whole mess of cards and make a bunch of attacks each turn if you get whirlwind off, stuff like that. Basically a quite fun experience that doesn't require the finesse of running, say, Colette, an understanding of synergy like running the Dreamer/Collodi, but still really fun for that.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Yeah, if you're just interested in learning the rules, Victorias would be just fine to learn and then you can narrow down which faction/crew(s) you are interested in.

Vics are a good starter crew, Outcast are not a good starter faction.

The reason is outcasts have relatively little crossover synergies. Freikorps & Viks can cross over but leviticus doenst play well with Hamelin who doesnt play well with FreiViks,

It's doable but you won't be able to use models for one group well in another like guild can.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

I'm headed to a store tomorrow that has some folks who are going to demo the game for me.

Oh and I forgot to mention I no longer have the Viktorias boxed set models. Actually all I have is the rulebook right now (the current one).

I was flipping through the factions and I'm liking the Neverborn's look... so I'm going to start with them. The folks who are going to demo the game have a bunch of Neverborn stuff I can try out.

I'll let you folks know how it goes.
