I am confused about Lords of war. Am I allowed to use one in a standard 40k game that's not apocalypse? For example can I use a Baneblade in my guard list even if my opponent does not have a Lord of war or even if we do not have the escalation supplement?

Lord of War is just another slot in the Force Organization Chart just like Fast Attack or Elite. If you have have a unit that is a LoW you can take in the the LoW slot just like if you have a unit that is an Elite you take it in the Elite slot

You need the escalation book because it has the baneblade rules, but you are allowed to field them in regular 40k without enemy superheavy or permission.

Vast majority of the models that would fall under Lord of War are in the escalations book, or various forgeworld books.

You can field 1 per CAD you bring, but the points most LoW take to bring probably prevent you from bringing more than 1 anyway unless you go unbound. For my orks the Stompa runs me 800pts before the gakload of Meks i sneak inside it, no way in hell im fielding two of those short of a 4k+ game lol.

However LoW models tend to be crazy strong, and you will win a lot of enemies if you just start spontaneously bringing them into a friendly game. If you want to bring one....unless its Ghazzy lol worthless bastard....i'd talk to your opponent first as some of them can easily win a 1500-2000pt game on their own.

An ork with an idea tends to end with a bang.

So let me get this right, there is nothing preventing you from taking a lord of war in a normal game? Because I ordered the new Logan grimnar model without realising he was a LoW

This looks like a new trend with the recent codex releases.

Previously LoW were huge units as described by others, but now you're also seeing a few cheaper character units being included in this force organisation slot. So he is in your normal codex and you can take him in normal games without restriction or discussing with your opponent etc.

Back in the day, we were epic Space Vikings with horns, and beer, and stupid mockney accents, and we didn't have any truck with this flying around like a pansy shizzle. We certainly didn't surround ourselves with mangy animals.

Now we're basically the Bestiality Chapter.

We also now ride chariots and employ daemonic dreadnoughts...also, we fly and teleport with abandon. With wolves.

Cheers dude, do you require a HQ as well as then? Or is a LoW a HQ too?

For SW the 'Unleashed' detachment that we use as standard lists two HQ's and two troops as compulsory, and the LoW is indicated as optional. So I guess he doesn't count as a HQ...which is a bit weird for Logan fluff wise but there you go lol.

Nothing wrong with that, you can play him. The LoW-complaints are more about Stompas, T-C'tans and Baneblades.
I don't think anyone would object if you brought Logan.
But he's no longer a HQ, so you would still need one of those.

With the new Detachment you could basically take 7 HQ's! Six from the Detachment and a seventh as Logan

Don't forget that he can still be your Warlord!
