I want to compile a list of viable 40K lists, and I need your help. I want to be able to achieve two things. The first is to know what is out there so that I am less likely to face a surprise at a tournament that I wasn?t aware of. The second is to be able to pick out new list that is less seen in my area.

Here is what I?ve got:

Imperial:

Space Marines
-Chapter Traits
-Vanilla
-Ultramarines
-Space Wolves
-Blood Angels
-Dark Angels
---Ravenwing
---Deathwing
-Black Templars
-13th Company Space Wolves (eye of terror)

Imperial Guard
-Doctrines
-Abhumans (From WD)
-Armored Company (CA 2004, may not be RTT legal)
Daemon Hunters
-Gray Knights

Witch Hunters
-Sisters of Battle

Chaos:
Chaos Marines
-Khorne
---World Eaters
-Nurgle
---Death Guard
-Slaanesh
---Emperors?s Children
-Tzeentch
---Thousand Sons
-Alpha Legion
-Iron Warriors
-Night Lords
-Word Bearers

Lost and the Damned

Xenos:

Kroot Mercs (CA 2004)
Tau
-Farsight

Necons
Orks
-Speed Freaks
-Feral Orks (CA 2004)

Eldar
-Ulthwe/ Strikeforce (EoT)
-Iyanden
-Biel-Tan
-Alaitoc
-Saim-Hann

Dark Eldar/
Tyranids

What have I forgotten?

By viable lists I?m thinking lists that are legal in most RTT?s, GT?s, and the like. Thanks for your help.

Feral Orks?
To my knowledge they are RTT approved because they were in like the first Chapter approved book. Though I could be wrong about them. Also, what about the index Astartes Chapters who were in the book but got rewritten with the trait rules (like imperial fists, iron warriors est.) Maybe Grey knights & Deathwatch could be added for completeness?

Just some thoughts...

Washington. The state, not that festering stinkhole we call our capital.

Also forgetting a BIG one. Like Frontal Armor 14, Strength 8 AP 3 Big-The Armored Company. I hate all those damn tanks.... Ordinance blows big holes in my conscripts, which can't even do anything to them. :-[

Is Grey Knights a different list from Daemonhunters?
Are there really different rules for imperial fists or are they just a trait list?
Is there a Deathwatch list somewhere, if so where?

I added Armored Co., even though they are sledom allowed in tournaments in my area.

Well i suggested Grey Knights because you listed sisters of Battle as their own list...
Also even though it is not official I did hear that there would be a Xeno Hunter codex based on Deathwatch, so maybe in a few months?

Way back in the WD 250's they had all these fluff sections for a whole bunch of chapters, then at the end they would have special rules that you could use when playing that specific chapter. Then they were all compiled into 2 books Index Astartes vol. 1 & 2. Which I suppose are obsolete now, but just something to think about.

I was just wondering if your request was for a complete listing of all available armies or only armies viable in tournaments. You said you were looking for viable army lists but I see thousand sons and space wolves in there.

Ha ha, I guess I should have expected that. I?m looking for legal tourney list, even if they suck more than a black hole. I did include orks after all.

The lists that I?m really looking for are lists like Lost and the Damned, Abhumans, 13th Co., RTT legal lists that don?t have a codex named after them.

I played my Afriel Strain IG last weekend and I must have explained to 10-15 people, that they were not LatD, they are albino, etc, etc.

here's some that are ususally legal:

Kroot Mercenaries

Ork Clans

Ulthwe Strike Force (EoT)

Wych cult

Occasionally legal:
Relictors
Cursed founding chapters

EDIT also, the Catachans are available fro download from GW UK.  Unsure whether they are legal for GT use.

You forgot the Most important Legion of them all! The Black Legion. Are the cursed Foundings of the Space marines still valid?

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Blackmoor, thanks that was a big help.

Is The Black Legion different from stock Chaos? It can have Abaddon but what other differences does it have from generic Chaos Marines?

I don?t own Daemon Hunters or the EoT codex(s), are they worth picking up?

What lists are in EoT besides 13th Co.?
Are there other lists in Daemon Hunters, besides Grey Knights?

Where is Lost and the Damned?

Lost and the Damned is in the EoT book. The Deamon Hunters can run a Pure non Grey-Knights list using inducted Guard or inducted Marines, while bulking out with Inquisitorial Storm troopers. I would definately reccomend picking up at least the Deamon hunters book. It is always good to know their abilities because they have some that are similar to generic rules, but just a tad different in the actual effect.

Also isn?t there a PDF list in codex Armageddon? or is that too old?

And based on the breakdown you are giving I would say that Black Legion would be considered its own type of Chaos. But, I don't think you should count mechanised or foot slogging as different types of armies. Because this will start a slippery slope of various themed armies. Such as using Dwarfs as guardsmen to make a squats army, or the may other things that people will come up with. Custodian Army based on grey knights for example.

Death_wing, although Blackmoor didn't give exactly what I was looking for, but he gave something else just as useful. I want a list of armies that can be played in tourneys. I was looking for codex lists or little/lesser known lists like 13th Co. for example; it is found in a different codex (from SW) and I've only seen it once.

However playing against a horde of necons vs. playing against the destroyer list are two different things, just like mech vs. horde guard.

On the other hand if someone said Army of Death from CA 2002 (the all death co. army) I wouldn't add it to my list at the top of the page as it is seldom a RTT legal list. I'm not putting mech guard on the list as doctrines is already there, I did put Abhumans as those rules are not in the codex.

Listing styles is helpful as well since I'll be using this list to pick a new army. I'm really hoping that someone is going to mention some list that I've never heard of before, doubtful, but I can hope.

Blackmoor, I am looking for a list of army lists that people can play, and primarily in tournaments. As I said above, although your info was not my primary goal, it is extremely helpful, perhaps more so than my original goal.

I was being sincere in my first thank you, and I still am.
