[After being away from 40k for over a decade, my 2 sons and I have made 3 armies and we're enjoying starting up new with 7th - forgive the newbie questions :(]
I thought I had it figured out that a model could attempt a cover save and then either an armor save or invulnerable save (choosing the better of course). But I've seen a few comments in these forums leading me to believe I may be wrong - that any model only ever gets a single save roll?

One save roll. You always take whatever is best. You CAN sometimes also take a feels no pain roll, but those aren't really saves

One. Either Cover, Armor or Invulnerable, whichever is best.
Keeping in mind that Feel No Pain is not a save, so that could also be taken on top of a save.

You get 1 saving throw. You choose between cover/armour/invulnerable saves. Look for the rules on cover saves and invulnerable saves in the rulebook. They should be in the index.

For reference, 'Models With More Than One Save' near the end of the rules for the Shooting phase. The specific rules you are looking for are in bold.

I should have been able to figure out the answer given enough time, but honestly my head is REALLY starting to swim in lost details! Thanks everyone! We decided to start with 500 point armies just to learn the rules and so far so good. I'm pretty sure we have never played a turn 100% correct yet, but we must be getting closer!
Only downside right now is I picked Tzeentch because I love the fluff, but boy is it painful. My sons (Tau and Tyranid) are picking me apart. But at least i'm having fun causing "chaos" and tactical objectives give me the chance at winning.

Don't worry! I've been playing for years and I'm still thinking back on my games finding things I've done wrong here and there! The important thing is that everyone agrees on how you play it at the time, so that everyone has a good time. You can always research questionable decisions after the games and make changes (or house rules) for the next game!
