How do formations work in 40k?

Just interested as Champions of Fenris interests me.

Formations are a detachment, and your army is either bound, meaning everything fits in a detachment, or unbound, where you do not have to fit a detachment.

Formations always give you their special rules when fielded however, so even "unbound" if you field Champions of fenris it would gain any special rules.
