So having missed majority of 6th edition and not having played a game of 7th edition, I've signed myself up to a tournament in October and I could do with a bit of help brainstorming a list to take. I managed to get a bit of time last night to come up with some ideas around a Drop Pod Wolf list and want some feedback. It's a bit rough on points as I left my list at home but the general jist is below....

HQ
Ulrik the Slayer

Elites
7 Wolf Guard with Combi Plasmas in a Drop Pod
Murderfang in a Drop Pod

Troops
10 Grey Hunters with CCW, 2 Plasma Guns & Plasma Pistol, a Wolf Guard Leader with Combi Plasma in a Drop Pod
10 Grey Hunters with CCW, 2 Plasma Guns & Plasma Pistol, a Wolf Guard Leader with Combi Plasma in a Drop Pod
10 Grey Hunters with CCW, 2 Plasma Guns & Plasma Pistol, a Wolf Guard Leader with Combi Plasma in a Drop Pod

Heavy Support
6 Long Fangs with 3 Missile Launchers & Flakk Missiles and 2 Heavy Bolters
6 Long Fangs with 3 Missile Launchers & Flakk Missiles and 2 Heavy Bolters

Now if I remember correctly, that is not far off 1600 (assuming my maths were correct as my brain was being destroyed by the background noise of my wife's soaps!).

The general idea for the plan is for Ulrik to partner up with the Wolf Guard and pod in with two units of Grey Hunters and plasma things to death. In theory I shouldn't have too many die from plasma burns thanks to Ulrik giving preferred enemy to SW units near him. Long Fangs are there to provide long ranged support and Murderfang is just for a bit of Close Combat fun. I think I could probably change the layout of the weapons on the Long Fangs and probably try to squeeze in some Razorbacks for them. I also think I need some fast elements in for rapid reaction to things, so I was thinking of some bikes. So any thoughts or ideas?

I'm assuming you're going for competitive as it's essentially a spam list. Which is fine. In which case, the load outs on your long fangs seem a little strange? They only have split fire now, so only one guy can shoot at a different target, it kinda makes more sense to have 4 of one gun and one of the other.

Also, with the exception of immobile pods you only have 1 armoured unit. He will probably fall victim to every single s8+ weapon on the board.... Mildly concerning considering he will be podded in and will have to stand there for a turn. Is there anyway you can squeeze points for pods on the long fangs. They don't have to use them, but it will grant you and extra pod on first turn...

Shows how out of touch I am! I was thinking about changing them to 5 guys with missile launchers and lascannons after I posted the army.

Good point! I only included Murderfang as it's a nice model and it allows me to indulge that part of me that enjoys seeing a unit rampage through the enemy in close combat. I think in hindsight I would be better having a empty pod as a Fast Attack choice and then some units of bikes.

It depends on how competitive you want to be. In my 'for fun' list I run murderfang too. For the exact same reasons. But he drops on when there is already 2 vindicators on the board in the hope of giving more than just his armour to shoot at. But in my slightly more competitive list I can't justify the risk of him dropping in and being popped before he has chance to do anything. So, in that list I make room for a storm fang with its large blast AP3.

One thing I will say... I am dead against fielding empty pods for the purposes of increasing alpha strike. Just because in my mind they're dedicated transports. But that's just me, and perhaps I'm leaving myself at a disadvantage by doing that.

The new codex requires you take 2 HQ units. You only have one listed.

Incorrect. If you take a wolves unleashed detachment you need 2 HQ. If he takes a combined arms detachment of which every single army is allowed to, then he still only needs one.

A point to note, if you take a wolves unleashed detachment you gain the outflank and reserves bonuses, but DO NOT get objective secured. If you take a CAD, you gain objective secured but won't get the outflank and reserves rules.

Nice catch, didn't notice you lose OS with the wolves unleashed. Thanks for pointing that out!

I suppose it makes you think about your detachment. I'd imagine every new Dex with have its own detachment options with bonuses. I've heard the new logan supplement will have yet another one in it. It means that at least everyone won't have objective secured... Which became a little pointless.... I like the wolves detachment as it means my 255 point storm fang is guaranteed to turn up turn two. Unless I feel like outflanking 235 points of TWC and a 275 point lord. There's less risk in putting that many points in reserve with wolves unleashed.

Very true and now everything scores, so OS is nice, but not necessary. My list has 11 units under WU, 3 pods included. So even without OS they will still be tough get off all the objectives.

I like the guaranteed one unit arrives per turn. especially with odd pods and flyers. I think more often than not, I will run WU over CAD.

The logan supplement FOC requires you to take 2 elite choices rather then troops. It also allows you to take up to 8 elite slots! However it only allows 4 HQ slots compared to the 6 from wolves unleashed. I got the supplement as part of my wolf guard edition codex.

Sorry, yes I should have said I was using the combined arms detachment, just because having Objective Secured Troops is too good in my eyes. I think the Wolves Unleashed is a nice option. but more if you are going down mobile assaulty army than static counter attack army.

I agree but I think it's something we will see more often with the new books. I'm guessing it's more so for unbound armies where GW are letting players take what they want but we all know it'll get abused competitively!

Objective Secured is a Command Benefit for some detachments.

The CAD has it listed. Wolves Unleashed does not.
