I love Krom. There, I said it.
He is my favorite Space Wolves character, and if he gets to strike back in a challenge, then he does some incredible damage. The only problem is that unwieldy axe...it's awesome, but it's also what usually ends up getting him killed. That and his pesky lack of eternal warrior, but there's not really anything I can do about that...
so I came up with this using the new SW codex. It's very similar to what Krom does now, is considerably more expensive, but evens the odds on initiative a bit and buffs his unit of Blood Claws.
Wolf Lord (Krom 2.0)
-Frost Axe
-Armor of Russ
-Wolfenstone
This gives you 7 WS6 S7 AP2 I1 attacks on the charge, a 2+/4++ and -5 initiative to folks fighting in a challenge. With a re-roll, I'm hoping to grab the Saga of the Warrior Born, which will allow me to re-roll failed to hit rolls in a challenge. It's 200 points, but confers Furious Charge on the unit he's in, which will probably be 14 Bloodclaws. combined with Ulrik's preferred enemy. Its a total meat grinder of a unit.
The downside is that Krom is 70 points cheaper, has a 3+ instead of a 2+, automatically gets Warrior Born, has a master-crafted frost axe and has stubborn, but doesn't give Furious Charge to his unit and his opponents strike at initiative. Krom also MUST issue and accept challenges, and also can't take Fenrisian Wolves, although I'm not really sure if that is such a big deal.
I've run Krom in 4 games and he's died in 2 of them. One was to a Chaos Lord with a murder sword trained on Krom, the other was to a Berzerker champion with a power fist. The Chaos lord hit first, so Krom had no chance. The zerker champ went at the same time, so he and 3 of his boys also died, but that's not exactly an even exchange. The problem is that he gets pulped by instant death, and S8 things are in abundance. Being able to NOT issue challenges is kind of a big deal to. Now, I had thought about swapping his Frost Axe for a Frost Sword, meaning that in the same loadout he will probably be able to hit before his opponent who will be at -5I, but then I lose the AP2, though that's probably not much of an issue since terminators are fairly rare.
I plan to run Krom in some form (either his data sheet or the loadout above) in every game. The question is which one will I be safer with?
