I've been reading about the Deathwatch recently and I've got a little question:

It is said they paint their armour black (save for one arm and their shoulder pads), but do they keep this paintjob when they return to their Chapter?
And do they keep their special inscribed silver pauldron?

It's because I've made myself a Deathwatch Heavy Flamer marine from GK and SM bits, but painting him all-black seems a bit silly, seeing as my Chapter's colours are purple and black to begin with.

Black is the color of the Deathwatch where they strip all loyalties and take up the Inquisition's mantle. If they return to their chapter though, and not many do, they only mark on their armor to say they did spend time with the Ordo is a small Inquisition badge. Their armor is back to Chapter normal.

But not sure if the arm is left alone. It was just their shoulder pad but I've been away from Kill Team since it came out so cannon might have changed... again... as it always does...

They don't keep the black. However, they keep the silver Deathwatch shoulder pad, wearing it on the right arm. The left arm has the chapter symbol again.
So paint him in your chapter colours, execpt for the Deathwatch shoulder pad.

I suppose it isn't too grave an issue if the Deathwatch shoulder pad is still on the left side? I'm afraid I already glued it to the left arm, seeing as all Deathwatch Marines wear it on that side during their service, with their Chapter's icon on their right shoulder pad.

If it's not bothering you, just keep it. It doesn't really matter.
You could come up with a fluff reason for nearly everything. Just say your chapter honours the service in the Deathwatch this high, that they keep the chapter symbol on the right pad and the Deathwatch on the left.

I should really write my Chapter's fluff down one of these days, that'll probably make constructing/painting/explaining stuff about my Chapter a lot easier
